Bodkin

Recommended Posts

post-9961-1201047840_thumb.jpgThe wife decided to try picking something with my bodkin and broke it. Ive been looking for one like it but cannot find one. I think it might be a Thompson tool, not sure. Does anyone know where I can get one or have one they dont use any more that would be willing to part with. I was sorta attached to it. I did fix with a dremel but the needel is not straight and it cums apart sometimes. Drives me nuts. Replacements are much shorter I dont really like them. Let me know.

I think wives view fly tying desks as a little mecca of tools for them to do stuff around the house. Then when you correct them they get pissed and tell you to get over it.

Wife: "There only scissors!"

Husband: "No there 20.00 scissors!"

Wife: "Well that's your dumb fault for buying 20.00 scissors!"

How do you argue with that?

Sorry but I dont know where to get another one. Im sure one will turn up for you. Good Luck in the search.

Kind of reminds me of fights my mom and I used to have when I used her sewing scissors. Have I become my mom?

I think that is a Thompson, I really don't know if they're manufactured anymore. I had one that I gave away when I bought a Wasatch tool kit. Have you thought about making one? I've seen some really nice bdkins made from an old cheapo bamboo fly rod and a large sewing needle.

P.S. Tell the wife one more mistake and she's history. :hyst: I tried that once, didn't work.

Matt C. sounds like youve been at my house.

I have thought of making one but I like the weight and length of this one. Man now I sound like the wife. Which by the way will be official FEB. 29 in North Carolina. Anniversary once every 4 years. Thats what Im talkin about. :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo:

This is the very reason why I ended up having to install a lock on the drawer

of my fly tying desk and 'try' to remember to put my tools away after each session.

Scissors, bodkin, razor, tweezers, cutters - all were declared fair game by my daughters !

It's one thing when your scissors get compromised, but it's a whole other deal when you

can't even find them !!! :wallbash:

My Matarelli whip finish tool seemed to be the only thing they weren't able to find a use for !

Here is an idea but I don't know how it will turn out, try to epoxy a small piece of balsa wood or cork to the tip of the old bodkin and then glue a needle right into the wood.

Yeah, it looks like a Thompson to me, but don't get too upset with you wife, 'cuz I too had a Thompson bodkin that broke. I tried to fix it... but without luck.

I have at least 12-15 bodkins on my bench... big ones, little ones, skinny ones, thick ones...

Bodkins made of wood, balsa, brass and aluminum.. used to have a neat little one made of antler... also one made from a broken section of bamboo rod...

the ones i used last night cost a whooping 50 cents... at that price I bought two!

I've made them (my favorites), bought them, and received bodkins as gifts...

Why would ya' only have one?

If you are REALLY hard up for this bodkin you could try taking it to a local machine shop with a lathe and have them drill out the old broken piece and then you can epoxy the tip back in again. It looks like brass and they probably won't be able to bore out the harder metal, in which case they can cut it maybe a half inch shorter and then bore into the brass.

Just an idea for ya.

Hi steelyjim,

They are available from one of my suppliers off shore but unfortuneately the minimum order $1K. A friend of mine made one using a longer metal sleeve for tying tube flies, a needle, several metal beads from a craft store, and crazy glue. Take care & ...

I needed a bodkin years ago but didn't want to spend the money. I was plum poor back them. What I did was take a large wooden pencil and cut it down to about three inches and drilled out the lead center and epoxied a needle in it. Works great. I've been using it for at least 25 years.
