Worstcaster 0 Report post Posted February 23, 2008 I know it's not an issue until summer, but what is the difference between a caddis larvae and pupa?
rockworm 0 Report post Posted February 23, 2008 Caddisflies, unlike mayflies, have four stages of development: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The larval form for the most part resembles a caterpillar or maggot. In some species the larva is hidden within a case of stones or sticks or leaves. In others, the larva roams free. In either case, when the larva is finished growing it enters a quiescent phase called the pupa. The pupa does not feed or show much outward activity. The pupal stage for the caddisfly is the equivalent of the coccoon (or crysalis) stage for the moth (or butterfly). Within the pupa the insect is changing from the worm-like larva to the winged insect. When these changes are complete the pupal case fills with gas, causing the pupa to rise to the water's surface. The gas also helps the emerging caddisfly split and crawl out of the pupal husk. Its wings quickly unfurl and the adult flies off to find a safe place to rest until it is time for mating to begin. As for tying flies to imitate them: There are a great many patterns for the larval stage; ranging from the naked green rockworm to the fully-cased strawman or the epoxy-and-pebble-cased larva. (As always, it helps to have photographs and know the size of the naturals you are imitating.) The pupae are all actually fairly similar and resemble the adult in size. Legs and antennae are not apparent because they are confined beneath the pupal husk. The wings are also confined beneath wingcase. Apart from Lafontaine's Deep Pupae, there are not many good patterns for the caddis pupa. There are a great many more patterns for the emerging insect, which may be considered the endpoint of the pupal stage. The emerger resembles the adult, but with reduced wings. Excellent descriptions and matching patterns can be found in Lafontaine's Caddisflies and Shweibert's Nymphs.
