StuFarnham 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2008 My friend, Scotty Howell, died today at 2PM after an extended struggle with throat cancer. He psoted here under the handle 'Hywel', in honor of his Welsh heritage. Scottty was an innovative and artistic fly tier, a master of his craft with an original and distinctive use of material and color. More than that, he was my brother in spirit. Agumentative, passionate, creative, temperamental, enthusiastic, sarcastic, intelligent. Say a prayer, raise a glass, or just look at and admire his work. Ronn Lucas 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2008 Scotty will be missed. He has a special place in my heart. You, Scotty and I go back a few years and we had some great times and conversations. He could tie a mean fly and as you said, was very creative. He left us better than he found us. The good news in this is that his battle with that vile disease is finally over. God rest his soul. garren 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2008 Very sorry to hear. I met Scotty years ago at one of the Expo's in Eugene. I won some of his flies in the auction that year. I was very impressed with his work. Cancer is a horrible thing. I lost a very good friend and mentor, Al Brunell, to cancer two months ago. CapeBSalar 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2008 This is indeed sad news. I feared the worst when I hadn't heard back from him, we were chatting back and forth on the board here and exchanging emails and we were actually in the middle of swapping some flies with each other a few months back, a couple emails gone unanswered I knew something wasn't right, I was afraid that his sickness had progressed. I'm glad he rec'd my flies and had the chance to admire them, as he told me so, and I only hope that he had the chance to fish a few. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Scotty's family and friends. Indeed a great loss to the tying community. Rest in peace friend, Sincerely, Damian.

Just Tie 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2008 Even though I had never met him I see that he was a good man but from everything bad comes some good because he can now fish for eternity in that great lake in the sky. Regards, Jason.
letumgo 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2008 I greatly admired his flies and at one point joked with him about writing a book on tying his beautiful steelhead flies. I would have loved to look over his shoulder as he tyed these creations. He was modest about his work and had a great sense of humor, throwing out statements like "But every so often the sun will eventually shine on a dog's Kiester!" when he was complimented on one of his flies. I am very sad to hear of his death. He will be missed. He and his family and friends will be in my prayers.
VERN-O 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2008 wow some really great ties from a great tyer
tompa 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2008 That was really really sad to hear. I never met Hywel since we live on different parts of the globe, but for about 3-4 years ago we started exchanging PM:s and email. We shared much the same thoughts of why we were tying flies and we also shared a lot of ideas in how to build a good fishing fly. We also shared the same profession, years ago Scotty worked as a sous chef and so am I. Scotty tought me how to tie his Olive Chieftain and my thoughts always go to him when I fish it. Cancer is the work of the evil men, and as such it should only happen to bad people. At least in my believe. I guess I was wrong. I hope the the warmth of his memory will help his family to stick through this. //Thomas
willowhead 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2008 Hi Stu, long time no talk.....this is so very sad. I was hoping so much to finally meet Scottie and YOU in person in March. Now it will be you without Scotty. I do look very much forward to meeting you. We've known eachother since '99 by way of FAOL and other sites. I use to email back and forth with Scotty a bit and he knew that he was truely one of my heros as a fly tyer. And he was always very encouragin to me, and gave me a lot of confidence, cause he was so supportive and complimentery. And oddly enough (not him, my flies), he actually meant it. Every since i've been aware of his tying, he has been one of my all-time favorites. I didn't know he was sick though. What a tradgedy.....i knew you guys were pretty tight, cause you always spoke so fondly of him, and shared the things you learned from him. He was very humble about his tying and the cat had SKILLS. Best heads on the planet. Well, if there's a God, and there is........Scotty be cool now. So that we got,.....just knowin' he's much happier and painless. Like we've always said in the Apache' Band, "Rough Out Here." And "it won't be long now." (speakin' for myself).....Misa and i will be out early Stu.....should hit town by the 26th of Feb. or the 27th at the latest. Gonna do some fishin'. Got a tip as to where to go and get a license? We're in the hotel right next to the gig. I think it's a Comfort Inn? Drop over anytime. Or we'll see you at the show. mark.....
