Zach Bearden 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2008 I have decided to start doing tube flies but I need some help. I dont wanna buy a whole new vise just for tubes and have seen some converters in the catalogs I get. What brand is a good starting point? I don't have a ton of money to spend on it so Ill need to watch that. Also what types of tubes should I start out on? I will be tying these for Striped Bass in rainbow trout colors and shad colors. Thanks Yall!
tompa 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2008 Hi Zach I´ve been tying tubes for more than a decade and my advise is don´t buy any converters or tube holders at all. They all have one thing in common, THEY SUCK!! Go to a taylor craft shop and buy yourself a felting needle. I think it will cost you about 1 $. It´s a needle with tiny barbs and it´s tapered in thrre steps. They have been on the market since about the 12th century but funnily the work super well with the FITS tube system. The grip well and comes off easily. All my buddies here in Sweden use them and there are never any worries. Good luck with the tubes. Here´s a link to a picture of the needle in question http://web.comhem.se/~u58707754/arbetsbesk...va/torrtova.htm skitt fiske // tompa
15_10-11 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2008 You can use also normal needle in diferent diameter. I use them together with this show by Tompa. Also very good tool is big hook something like 6/0 for full dressed flies (with out eye) Shank is conical than easier you block tube on it. Any way 5$ has to be enough to fit most of tubes. Just Tie 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2008 As for tubes you can get so many tube from a box of cotton buds. All tou have to do is cut off the cotton ends and use a lighter to curl one end and leave the rest to be trimed to size. The tubes should be 2 inches long and the clear blue ones are the best common tube and clear is rare but best. To make them heavy wrap flat lead sheet onto the tubes. Happy tying, Jason.
