Twofingerz showed you a good way to make them on the fly itself, but they can be made up ahead of time and just be ready to go. Check out the one my buddy made at this page.

It doesn't show exactly how to use it. basically, you run wire from the motor to a pin on the far left side. then, you lay your dubbing on top of the wire. now bring the wire back on top, basically making a dubbing sandwich with wire bread. Then, with the wire wrapped back to the motor and turn on the motor. This twists up the wire and traps all the dubbing. Since it's wire it holds together and you can spin up hundreds of these and keep them for when you are ready. Twofingerz link shows how to make them on a 1 fly basis.....which is great and I use it all the time.....but having options is good!

and working with foam sheets.....well, just cut them up and try things out. there are tons of patterns out there.

I hope your daughter ties. Mine loves it and sometimes adds tons of foam to a hook!

Ty cutting foam sheets on a self healing mat, available at craft or dollar stores. The Dollar store one will be cheaper. I usually place the foam sheet on the self healing mat and place a metal ruler on top of it, exposing a strip of foam of the desired width. I then cut it with a razor knife, pressing the ruler down firmly with one hand.

The metal ruler should be more like a kid's ruler which has a profile to it , and not like a machinist's or cabietmaker's ruler which is dead flat. The profiled ruler is stiffer than a flat ruler and has a bit of thickenss to it where the knife travels against it.

The self healing mat allows the razor knife blade to go into it and protects the table, etc. beneath the operation.

If you have access to a paper guillotine, you could try that. Just sandwich the foam between a couple of sheets of cardstock and then cut the whole assembly.

Hope this helps.

scissors work great on foam. use the long ones so the cuts are straighter than using dr slick type scissors. the fish wont care if the strips a little uneven.

you can also put the foam sheet thru a paper shredder to cut strips. try it, it works. you do have to use a shredder that cuts paper into strips vs the ones that cross cut.

The best way that I've found for cutting foam is to use a metal straight edge and a Fiskar Rotary Cutter. Place the straight on the foam with the correct width you want exposed and run the Fiskar Cutter along the edge. Works great and is a lot faster and more accurate that scissors.

cut your foam into strips with a straight–cut paper shredder . . . a cross–cut shredder if you’d rather have really small ant bodies . . .

I glue foam sheets together with a spray adhesive.

I then punch out bodies with leather punches that fit in the drill.

You can make alot of bodies in ashor ttime.
