day5 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2008 OK Ive had 10 or so people tell me that I should do a instructional DVD. Honestly I think they are all nuts and for more than that reason. I was planning on making a fly fishing commercial for you tube for my site this summer. But now Im wondering if I should expand my thoughts and do a full hour+ DVD. So please be honest do you think I could sell a full hour+ of how to tie some of my patterns (with voice over) and also include some how to on how I fish them for different species? Or am I as nuts as the people who think it might be a good idea? If you think it is a good idea is 19.99 for a home quality production burned off of my PC too much? Ive also been told that I should include some materials for each fly. So Ive got thick skin tell me what you think....

oatka 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2008 Personally....I watch your Hatches TV videos way too much. that's somehow got to be a compliment. I love the new patterns, but I love that with each video i watch of yours, I learn something new. So, i definitely think you have some good patterns and techniques. Ok, so that's some good stuff about you and your tying. I've never owned a tying video other than the WAY boring one that came with my tying kit I started off with 10 years ago. I've thrown it into the VCR a few times in the last 10 years, and it is so lame, it's amazing. So, I think that now a days you'd have to have a very different, or at least entertaining video to make a difference. Why am I going to give Day5 $20 when I can get other videos on how to tie the same patterns right off the internet? You'll have to do a lot of filming and editing. Are you up for the challenge? So, make it fun, interesting, useful, informative, and maybe, just maybe, i'll find a way to get a copy without sending you my money! If you go for it, good luck, and let me know if there's anything you need help with. (i'm not in anyway qualified to help, but thought i'd offer!) Guest Big E Report post Posted March 15, 2008 Other people do it so why not you? You've got the skills and you have the video part down so why not? I would however suggest that you do a bunch of videos and then allow people to pick and choose which videos that want on their DVD. You may want to also get some footage of that fly actually catching fish and include it as well. I also prefer the tying videos that share some background about the fly and tips along the way rather than those that say here's the fly, these are the materials, you do this then this and this, and job done....gee I tied that pretty fast. Or just skip the DVD part and give us instant gratification. Put a bunch of videos up and digitally send them. As far as the materials...I would skip that part and think about lowering the price. Perhaps down the road you could do a tie a pattern dealio where you have the materials to tie lessay 10 flies, a video, and written step-by-step with pics and a finished fly that you tied. On the other hand though I'll be pissed because now instead of watching you tie on Hatches TV, I'll have to buy a dang video.
Fly Tyer Guy 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2008 Sounds Good, But you more than likely would not have any music by Mr. Paisley, Like in you videos , Good stuff! I'm not sure if I would buy it, But I'm sure it would be very entertaining!
down2earthlv 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2008 I would jump off the band wagon.... 19.99 for a dvd is of course a good price, but maybe you should consider 14.99 or 9.99 for a shorter dvd.... The less expensive, the more you'll sell. Less than 19.99 will draw a lot of attention!

Fly Tyer Guy 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2008 I'd say no, I've never heard of a DVD coming with materials, On the other hand it could be what sets yous apart from all the other ones. :dunno:

sherrib 0 Report post Posted March 15, 2008 I would buy a dvd that came with materials to tie what was on the video. I think that would be a big incentive for someone just learning how to tie since they aren't sure what types of materials and feathers to get anyway. Or even knowing what size hook, type of hook to use etc. Sherri B
