Fly Tying

OK be honest what do you think.....

Recommended Posts

Matt my honest opinion.....

I like your patterns, and I like your Hatches TV vids, very nice step by steps on some nice inetersting patterns....BUT...

Tying DVD's are really starting to somewhat fade into the past, and honestly it's because of..well, sites like us :D Use to 10 or so years ago guys would have to buy books/buy DVD's/or take classes to learn to tie. Now a days though your average Joe blow that wants to learn to tie can sit down on his home computer punch in one of hundreds of websites and have all kind's of step by steps on how to tie right at his finger tips. Or he can take it a step farther and join a site like this and watch tying classes in real time with virtual classes.

To be able to actually sell enough tying DVD's to make it so your not loseing money/time you would need to have something really different/special that would make people feel like they had to have your DVD or else they were left out. And thats really not easy to do. Because even then you have to put alot of time and effort/money into promoting it to ever make a go of it.

I dont want to tell ya your wasting your time because I am the same way I'd like to do things with my rod business such as home made DVD's and mix it with fishing and music and such, but to make something desirable to people you really need to find out exactly what it is that would make them want to drop $20 on something they basiclly can get for free online.

I'd say think about what would make YOU want to buy a tying DVD...then find out if you can do what it is that you need to do to make your DVD attractive like that to people. Then crunch some numbers and see realisticly what you would have to charge to not "lose" money on it. Then sit down and come up with a price, and a plan to market it. Ask yourself a few things as well.....if you have to charge $20 for it to make a buck, then are people willing to pay $20 for something thats shot on a home vid cam and edited with basic software on a home PC? If not then you'll need to step up to HD dig cam to make it on par with the other $20 DVD out there. Now your talking $2000 for a vid cam that has that type of quality.

Not tryin to burst your bubble at all bud. Just that I've had thoughts of doing the same thing with Fly Fishing vids and rod building vids and when I sat down and really looked at it I realized it would ethier...1) end up costing me money in the long run. Or 2) I would have to spend $2000-$5000 up front to make it a quality item and then promote the hell out of it and have no guarantee I would ever get my money back.

Just tryin to help. If you do end up doing it then I hope it works out for you!

Steve

Yea kind of my fear. I figured I can get good sony disks and dvd clam shells for 40 cents each. So maybe a lower price is more achievable. Tell you what Ill play with the idea this summer shoot some film and see what happens. When Im done and Ill let ridderbos preview it If dies of laughter well ill leave it at that if he says its cool and worth 10 bucks 20 with materials better yet. But Im not in a position to buy a new camera of any sort. You are not bursting my bubble I asked for honesty

I guess you have to think about whether you want to be tied down to a business where you have to be constantly at the pc burning dvds. Steeldrifter makes good points, will it end up costing you , andddddd, can you offer something that makes your product indispensible? I personally love watching your vids and the "how to's". Is 19 bucks a good price for an hour vid? It is a lot to weigh out for a good decision. However, you do have a very good starting fan base here. I applaud your ability and the quality of what you do!

Matt, I think Steeldrifter may be right on ,I can tell you from experience in producing a DVD (for profit) it takes alot of sales before it pays off. I will say if you do all the filming and editing it will cut out alot of cost(money wise), as well as burning your own. I spoke with Chris Helms about this and he said there would be no way he would do one unless someone else footed the bill. Mind you when the Watt's produce Chris's vids they are running 3 cameras and will film for a week straight. When prducing a normal video, minimal costs are between 5 to 8 thousand! You probably don't know it but I had a "beginner " fly tying DVD produced and never really saw any money. I did get some exposure and it was an experience. It takes the right advertising and remember the producers get their expenses first. In your case it just might work, cutting out all the middle man and burning your own would be quite a savings. Don't go into it thinking your going to make money at first, and remember to be yourself. Its obvious that you can tie a mean fly and have something to share. Being yourself is more important in making a video than anything else, personality is very important and things like background music and some of the things I've seen on your vids and stuff fred(fishigan) has done , make it stand out from others and I think it will "catch" the young and up comming tyers. Just this, If your going to do it, just keep it fun B)

I say go for it. You probably won't make a lot of money but you could make a few bucks if you produce the film yourself. You can also get DVD's copied for cheap. You don't need to do them 1 by 1 on your home computer.

I have a client who has a production DVD burner that can do 10 at a time and produce about 100 every 20 minutes. If you can find someone who has one that would work great.

Chicks tying topless would sell. I'd buy it! Better yet i'd have a topless chick handing my materials as needed  We would have to keep it real and educational.

Do you have any way to "host" the videos similar to the way I-Tunes works, or something like that? A link on your website where for 99 cents a download, people can download your tying videos.

That way, no burning DVDs. No shipping issues. No having to decide which ties to put on. AND, you could still have an option where the client could "pick" five ties for $10, with bonus fish porn of your "testers" (read Twohearted, Ridderbos, and I) catching fish on the flies they want to learn to tie, which you will have supplied us with, to have burned onto a disc.

Sounds great, right?
