need help with spinner wings

Recommended Posts

I'm tying my first spinner patterns and having problems anchoring the wings to the hook shank. Once I get them on the shank they can dip to either side during handling. Any suggestions? :dunno:

You didn't mention how you initially tie them in. Most start by tying them in using the traditional way you would tie in dry fly wings Tie them in upright first. Then bring them down with properly placed thread wraps(figure 8 if needed) <_< They will be quite secure and shouldn't be problem B)

The hackle tips must be well tyed on before you begin manipulating them. I usually do it like this: Align the tips and hold them in your left hand. Then hold the butts over the tye-in place with one stem on either side of the hook shank. Wrap your thread twice and check the posture of the wings. The hackle tips should be pressed together and parallel to the hook (maybe slanting slightly upwards.) Adjust carefully (but only if necessary.) When they look good tye down the rest of the butts with firm wraps. (Be sure to hold the wings steady in your left hand as you tye the butts.) Then you can use your left thumbnail or scissor blade to push the base of the hackles forward. (You want to be bending the hackle stems immediately behind the tye-in point.) The wings should separate as you do this. Push a bit more and the wings will begin to assume the "spent" position. Use a few thread wraps to obtain ther final position.

Thanks guys. Ii've been using synthetic materials with one peice for both wings. After securing it to the shank I use a figure eight pattern with the thread. :wallbash: As usual my short cuts create new problems. I'll do it the traditional way.
