spun deer hair flyer

Recommended Posts

just something i was playing around with, i don't know if this would catch any fish but after applying some fly dry it sure floats beautifully, the tail is solid fine blue wire for weight, wings are spun deer hair trimmed to shape.

As I mentioned in the other post, I was working on the same thing this evening. I like the idea. I think I'm going to try to clip the wing so that the wing profile is perpendicular to the hook shank not in line with it so that it resembles a comparadun style.

i like the looks of this fly, i think on my return from CJ i may try wings with leading edges of a darker hair to give an illusion of wing sets. a few fibers of darker hair forward and in the middle to seperate and create a look of two sets of wings. it floats like a ballon when dressed with fly dry, i beat it on the water and couldn't get it to sink or fall on it's side, it floats nicely in an upright position but i think it's the weight of the hook and wire combined to act like a keel that keeps it upright. the deer hair has natural oils for bouyancy also so thats helps a bunch

anyhows, i leave in about three hours for CJ so i'll catch you guys when i return, i got alot to learn from all of you if my evolution into these fishing flies is to move forward. have a great week guys

stay safe

Oh No! Guidry is trying his hand at Deer Hair. You know what happened when he started tying Salmon flies, the tying community has never been the same!

Neat fly. Sort of like a serendipity.

I'd call this an emerger pattern. (I'm not sure what your knowledge on mayflies is like, but this is the stage when they are stuck on the surface film hatching from their shucks. A very vulnerable time.) At this stage they tend to have a nice plump abdomen, as you have showcased so nicely.

I think it would be a great fish catcher.

Nice to see a trout fly from you.

Excellent looking pattern, Bud! It reminds me of a pattern called a "Mohican" which was created by Gary Lafontaine's daughter. It has a similar looking deer hair wing and it supposed to be a deadly attractor dry fly pattern. I like your idea of wrapping the body with light wire to make it break through the surface film. It should fish sort of like a klinkhammer pattern (body below the surface with the wing above water.

I think your onto something. Please let us know how you make out if you get a chance to field test it. ;)

heres the results, i caught one fish on this fly. right at dark, ted and i fished together with paul rossman on a beautiful pool in the farmington in conn. mayflies begin hatching and rising and i hooked up on the second cast , 20 feet out, nice 10 inch brown, setup and cast again, nothing, fish still rising, 4th cast another hookup, played it for a few seconds and broke off the 5X tippet. i only had one fly so that was it, tied on a sniky nicky and never got another bite, fish a few more minutes and we called it an afternoon.
