carpenter ant

Recommended Posts

This is what I use for an ant pattern.

Cover about 1/3 of a dry fly hook with thread. This is a #16 94840.

Select a bunch of deer body hair about twice the diameter of a wooden match. Lash it too the hook and bring the thread back to the starting point.

Pull the hair tightly foward and bind it down making the rear section of ant.

Pull 3-4 strands of hair back for legs on each side. Put a couple of wraps in front of the legs.

Make another body section.

And another,

An ant.

I got this pattern from an old book. Chauncy Lively's Flybox

Thanks. The way I see it, an ant couldn't look any better, or be faster to tie. And with the addition ar subtraction of a few hairs, you can easily tie the exact size you need. Can't wait to try.
