jeepclown 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 What head cement or equivelant do you use to get the really hard glossy heads on streamer or salmon flies?
Bruce Derington 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 The guys tying the Classics use regular head cement and do mutiple coats. You can getSally Hansons hard as nails at drug stores, works very well and comes in clear and black Bruce
James Daly 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 Veniard's Cellire, hands down. -Jamie EDIT: Cellire is the best COMMERCIAL cement. IMHO
Sampler 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 Veniard's Cellire, hands down. -Jamie I have always used basic head cement. So, what the difference? I would assume clarity, holding power, shelf life. Help please

Silver Doctor 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 I used Sally's for a great many years. I am now using Minwax Polycrylic. Wonderful stuff. It's opaque and dries crystal clear and super hard. The nicest thing is it's low odor and is thinned with water. looks great on my Classics.
James Daly 0 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 Cellire is varnish. Not the same as nail polish. Needs like 3 coats to make a nice smooth head. No need to thicken. Just apply it nice and even. But that is just my personal opinion..

flykid 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 I use Sally Hansen's for nice shiny heads. But For fishing flies I just use super glue. I get brush on glue and just refill the container with cheapo stuff. Dries fast and actuall looks pretty nice if you put on multiple coats. On fancies I also put the first coat as superglue then follow with nail polish. The super glue makes the thread nice and hard so the polish doesn't have to penetrate the thread and takes less coats.
jeepclown 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Thanks Guys, I am currently using Softex, and Sally Hansens. Softex of course does nothing for making a smooth head, and the Sally Hansens takes too many coats. The Cellire sounds like the ticket. Do you guys just use the same procedure when dealing with heads with stick on or glue on eyes?
James Daly 0 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 JC, No, I use 5 minute epoxy when putting on eyes or over laying them. You would need to use quite a few coats of the Cellire to get the durability with the eyes. Have you tried the UV Hard Head stuff by Loon?
Scud 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2008 I just bought the uv stuff last night I am going to try it next time I tie. I also bought a bottle of black head cement to see if it gives a better gloss. I have been using Daves head cement until now. I'll see what happens and let you know. Jeremy

James Daly 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2008 You know what works great for mixing epoxy? If you like Pringles, the lids are killer. They are small enough to hold in your hand, have a lip and are extremely reuseable. Plus, you get a clean slate on every tube you buy. Plus, added snack at the bench! -Jamie
