Los Alamos Hopper (modified Harrison Steeves pattern)

Recommended Posts

This is basically a Los Alamos Ant pattern that I have modified to make it more like a hopper pattern. I glued on the hopper legs before the final piece of foam is tyed down at the front. It needs to be field tested, but I think it will work nicely on the local smallmouth bass.

Note on the legs: I colored them with Sharpie markers to make them look more like real hoppers (see photos below). I've noticed that the ends of the legs tend to be redish and that the drumstick parts have a V-grid pattern on them. I was able to get similar results with a few strokes of Sharpie marker. The fish probably will not care, but I like the look of them better this way.

nice hopper Ray, I think those details could be the difference on a slow day. And you'll fish it with more confidence.

Great variation. I like the idea of coloring the legs, looks great. I just found a local source for those legs (Bass Pro Shop just opened a store about 1/2 hour away). Gonna have to pick up some. Thanks for posting.

That's the coolest monster hopper I've seen in a long time! That would work on lake, river and stream I think.

troutmagnet23 - I bought the legs from J. Stockards. There is a shortcut link to their listing for the TNT Hopper legs in one of the posts above. Just click on the link and it will take you directly to the hopper legs on J. Stockards web site. Otherwise, just go their web site and search on "T.N.T. Hopper" and you should find them.

Mark - I think the picture makes the pattern look larger than it is. The foam pieces are only 1" long by 3/8" wide at the front. The fly looks monster size in the photo, but it seems to be close to the size of a normal hopper in real life (~1.5" long including the legs). I can't wait to hear this pattern hit the water. I am hoping it actually has a bit of a "splat" sound when it hits the water. It should be fun to fish this along overgrown banks and the stream bank on a windy day. It certainly big enough to get a fishes attention... :D
