Knix 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2008 I hooked this little guy yesterday, but I have never seen such a fish with crazy red eyes. I am assuming it is a red eye bass, but would like for a confirmation from the rest of you. I caught him on a little black nymph

Redwings1 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2008 They are aggressive littel guys, and good fighters for the size. They do get a little larger, but one the size of a hand is generally a good one. I have had them smack streamers I cast for smallies that are actually larger then they are!
5wtT3 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2008 Definately a rock bass. We used to have many of them in our local stream but they sadly seem to have died off. I wonder if they are particularly susceptiable to pollution.

Bruce Derington 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2008 Most people have identified this as being a rock bass, which is correct . An important way to identifying this fish is being covered by your thumb, however I've caught enough of those to be sure. It can be confused as a warmouth(which this is not)
Fred H. 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2008 Bruce is correct.I had a chance to catch some this spring. Fiesty little guys. The warmouth which is similar and also has red eyes has a marking on his gill plate similar to a bluegill.Though both speices have several like charectoristics when seen apart you would have no trouble telling the difference if both were in hand. day5 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2008 (also referred to as a red eye and some other names) I call then "damit not another one!" they fight like crazy for 10 seconds then they just ski across the water! We catch them as big a 15 inches here!
Mr. Steelhead 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2008 I fish a clear water lake at night and when the Rock start to hit, so do the Largemouth, so I actually like it when the Rock start hitting because the fun is about to start.
