Got some yarn, now what?

Recommended Posts

I found some small diameter yarn in a couple different colors and I want to use it for tying. So what kind of flies can I tie with it. Im thinking maybe some trout flys and maybe some smallmouth flys. Any ideas?

well you could possibly tie a number of different flies depending on the color of the yarn you have, and if you have other materials with it. i have seen brown trout cought on a piece of red thread on a hook.

Polly Rosborough and Lee Wulff both used wool yarns for the bodies of some of their trout flies. Yarn is also used in a great many traditional salmon flies and streamers.

Small diameter yarn in a couple different colors is just what you need to weave some Polish nymphs. They are a little tricky at first, but they are very effective, and worth the effort to learn.

Also tie some killer bugs. Frank Sawyer, the originator of the pheasant tail nymph, first tied them with a yarn that is no longer available, but other yarns in other colors will also work.
