letumgo 0 Report post Posted August 5, 2008 I can't seem to get the Moldy Plum color scheme out of my head lately and I keep reaching for this set of colors. It should probably be called a Moldy Plum soft hackle, but I figured I make this PK's royalty payment for using his color scheme again. Thanks PK! Soft-hackle 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2008 Great look! The blues and purples are often ignored, however I've heard a lot of fly fishermen swear by it. I've had good results with the Snipe and Purple-a precursor to the Iron Blue Dun. Also the up-eye hook reminds me of Vern Hidy. Hidy tied his flymphs on up-eye hooks. In fact he used the same hook you are. He said they looked better rising to the surface. The 94842 is a dry fly hook, so it's light wire, but quite appropriate. He said Veniard also furnished a heavier wire up-eye, but I'm not sure if they make them anymore. I'll have to get some up eye's to try. Nice tying, Ray. Gets my wheels turning! DHise 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2008 Great fly. I appreciate the name, as well; the best form of flattery is "CASH".
letumgo 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2008 Mark - It was your recent posts that sent me back to the vice to tye some more soft hackle flies. I read about the hook last winter, in the new book on soft hackle flies. I read that Vern Hidy liked the up-eyed hook and had to give them a try. The lighter hook should make these fish close to the surface, sort of like an emerger. I haven't fished any of these yet, so I may be wrong.

I just about blew coffee out my nose when I saw the title. Actually, I just really appreciate the fact that something I tied led to such sweet flies!
