First things first, get a tetanus shot.

I had a pair of 5mm Hodgeman Dura Stretch waders for a few years before I sold em. I know Hodgeman usually gets a bad rap, but I had no complaints.

I know this will sound strange but it does work extremely well and has saved some very expensive waders many times. When my brother and I know that we are going to get into briars or anticipate such we put a pair of rubber hip boots on over our stocking foot waders. They have the boot shoe portion cut off and make like chaps. Are easy to walk and wade in and have never allowed our expensive stockingfoot wader to be damaged in any way. Hip boot are very inexpensive and are available used at swap meets and yard sales. But even if purchased new is cheap insurance for those expensive waders.
