flyrod98 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 I'm thinking about entering one of these hawk images in a wildlife calendar contest and would like some feedback on the which crop you find the most appealing.
Guest Report post Posted September 16, 2008 Hi flyrod98, I like the second one better. But is the wing bleached out or is that how white it is? Cool photo. Jim
Magoo 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 I like #1 better. The white of the underwing in #2 is too overpowering. Nice picture  .
Peterjay 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 It's probably just a matter of personal taste William, but one of keys to successful wildlife photography is demonstrating the way critters relate to their environment. and IMHO, number one shows a little bit more context. Good luck in the contest, regardless of which pic you choose.
INS 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 Nice photos. I like number 1. Too much wing in number 2.
sulfernut 0 Report post Posted September 16, 2008 #2 for sure!! I think it places just enough more emphasis on the bird's head and face, and this slight difference lends an enormous amount of extra "drama" to the shot!! Good luck with whichever shot you choose! flyrod98 0 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 Hi flyrod98, I like the second one better. But is the wing bleached out or is that how white it is? Cool photo. Jim I like #1 better. The white of the underwing in #2 is too overpowering. Nice picture  . This is the white variant or morph of the Swainson's hawk. My bird book describes the color as whitish or buffy white. To me it shows up as being off white or ivory. Anyway it is not a pure white, but it sure does jump out at you. It would have been nice to have some softer lighting. Thanks everyone, Jim, Magoo, cencalfly, sulfernut, INS, and Peterjay for taking the time to look and comment. The entry deadline is not until Oct. 17th so I have some time to go back to the raw file and play around a bit, or even better yet, go out and see if this guy is still hunting in the same area. It was fun watching it try to perch on top of that branch. It finally got the job done.
