willowhead 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2008 It was....... In the pics, (which were taken on Sun.) it looks a bit bleek as far as the crowd goes........and Sun. was slow.......but Sat. we had a real good turnout. Must be the times........i fear all shows are gonna see a downturn for '09........but it'll bounch back. These things go in cycles. All you can do is roll with the punches. Have your club start a small show of it's own.....(which may grow into a BIG show), that keeps the awareness of local communities up. Make sure you have a CAUSE behind the show.........stream work, conservation litigation, education, scholarship.....something your community (Chamber of Comerace), can get behind. They'll help you promote it, (saving you expense), if they feel it's good for the community. If your club is FFF Affiliated.....contact the FFF for help and advise. Form a committee and delegate different aspects of putting on a good show to different responsible people who will get the job done. And if you need to speak to me more about it........you can email me at [email protected] .....mark..... We're up to 165 pics now, with more to come..... willowhead 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2008 YUP! i hear ya guys...............those two cats sat right next to eachother and are friends from Spain............my wife and i are real good pals with Cholo and his wife Maribel.....who are the best friends of all three of the tyers who came this year from Spain. Cholo hates to fly though, so he didn't make it.............the three of them shared one table............the young guy in the middle was doin' Salmon flies and he gave me one............the cat to his left was doin' realistics that are OUTRAGEOUS! Some day i'll try and get my wife to take a pic of a plate of flies we have at home in Arkansas of Cholo's flies..........so ya'll can see 'em. mark..... Redwings1 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2008 The dragon was tied by Jorge Maderal and was ridiculously awesome in person, I took shots of it as well. To his left with the beerle backs, octopus, and mantis was Andres
willowhead 0 Report post Posted November 26, 2008 Yes Andres is the realistic tyer.........those beetles he does are incredable.......each one is designed to replicate a real bug in nature. He created the template he uses for most all of them and then alters it's shape, as to it's needs to represent an individuall specimen. And the paint jobs he does are just fantastic. When day5 refered to "the Dragon" i flashed that Mantis that Andres did.......but now i realize he meant one of Jorge's flies. i ask Misa to get that pic of the Stonefly underwater in the fish bowl......that shot came out great. And btw Mike......she got a couple nice shots of you as well. See ya in Mason, MI. Dinner on the 5th, show on the 6th. Really lookin' forward to it. We're at the Holiday Inn in Lansing. mark..... Btw.........all 222 pics are now up.........and that's IT! :yahoo: :ban:  :clapping: :crutch:  :punk:
Shawn Davis 0 Report post Posted November 30, 2008 Thank you, Misa, for all the wonderful photos. I think I got to see more of the show by looking at your photos than I did by actually being there. Some excellent, excellent tying was displayed there, and it was a pleasure to meet the fine people who came by my table. The trio from Spain was a great group of guys and a great group of tiers, as well. They did it right - great tying accompanied by Spanish red wine (they expressed great chagrin that no wine was served at the tier's banquet). I was flattered when Jorge told me that he was inspired by my work to push his tying to greater extremes. Now I'll have to pull out all the stops just to keep up with him! That dragon fly was amazing. Meanwhile, Andres's realistics were really incredible. I think that, as an artistic tier myself, it is the amazing detail of the realistics that most blows my mind - I could never tie that way. There were some incredible tiers of realistics at the show, and I wish I'd had more time to see all their work. Unfortunately, Manuel did not yet have his flies on display when I was at the Spanish table, and I didn't get to see his work. If the work of his colleagues, though, was any indicator, I'm sure they were very special flies. More than the great tying I saw, what I am most grateful for are the new friends I made at the show. It was a ton of fun, and I can't wait for the January show! -Shawn

Shawn Davis 0 Report post Posted December 2, 2008 I think I know the picture you mean, Steve. Those are not photographs in the foreground, they are actual flies! They were tied by Doug McKnight, and the flies were surrounded in their shadowboxes by real feathers arranged very tastefully around them. Great presentation of a few beautiful flies. I'd never met Doug before the show, but his work was really fantastic. -Shawn
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted December 2, 2008 I thought those two looked pretty darn realistic looking. Thats some really amazing work. I love the way the real feathers are included in the shadow box of it. Really beautiful :headbang:
