Dart 0 Report post Posted January 10, 2009 Nope, Brian... I think it's a little too long. The hackle should be about 1.5x the hook gape and the wing should be 2x the gape. I tried to edit the picture in Photoshop to show the proper proportions, but the program is acting wonky. I'll try again later. Editing?? Just post what you tie. With all the incredible talent and storehouse of tying years here, it will be the best way to learn. I think maybe I wasn't clear. I was going to try to edit HIS picture to include lines showing where the proportions should be. Unfortunately, I can't get my copy of Photoshop to open, so I was unable to upload a "guide" for him. But I agree... posting what you tie is a great way to learn. There are a lot of very helpful guys here.

Dart 0 Report post Posted January 11, 2009 I've never tied a stimulator, but I received some nice extras from Houndog in the recent Royal Family swap I hosted, so I thought I'd give 'em a whirl! Here is the first stimulator I've ever tied. This is something I tied quickly (quickly is not my style). This is a size 10 hook, but I thought hackle sized for size 10 looked better on this style of fly. I tied in two brown hackles and palmered one as normal and counter-wound the other as Jamie suggests here. Am I correct in making the head larger so the color is more obvious? I see a few problems with misplaced wraps, etc, but I'm primarily interested in proportions. I welcome feedback! I want to sit down and tie up a bunch of these for a fishing box tonight, so let me know what you think.
