Dubbing Brush Machine

Recommended Posts

use a dubbing loop right on the hook. it does the same thing and its free. comes with every spool of thread. rolleyes.gif

Dubbing loops work for smaller, simpler jobs. More complex combinations and larger volumes of material are much faster, easier, and more efficiently done with a brush machine in my humble opinion.

Any chance I could get a copy of those plans pmed as well?

This is an old thread, the poster with the plans may not be active anymore. Do a quick google and youtube search and you should get plenty of ideas.

I made mine a week or so ago with some scrap wood, wood glue, a nail, a screw, a cup hook and a cordless drill. It literally took me all of 5 minutes to assemble, it took longer for the glue to dry than to build it.

For those who want to use a Dremel to drive your dubbing brush maker and find that it turns too fast; as the motor has brushes in it, you can operate it through a rheostat to slow it down to a complete stop. A standard light dimmer switch is a rheostat, and works great for just such application. Here is a pic of what I cobbled together a few years back for just such purposes.

If its like mine it will be jerky as all hell. The hook does not run no where near true. It's a nice concept but fails miserably in practice, probably why the guy is out of business.

I have this dubbing block made by Jim Smith. Jim Smith published the parts list and directions to make this in Summer 2007 issue of Fly Tyer Magazine.

I use my norvise to make dubbing brushes, the standard table that norm sells is kind of short, but does work well. I hope to make a longer bench.

I use my rotary vice, a shoe box for the top, then attached to the stem of my pedestal vice. When done I keep everything in the shoe box. If you don't have a rotary vice EBay does sell one that does the same thing.
