guppergoo 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 So I am just starting out tying. I am already overrun w/ materials in ziplocs, containers, bags, etc. How do you manage it all? I want to have some sort of system that is easily portable as a unit. I never know if I will be tying at home, over some beers at my neighbors or if I will have to up and move to another room in the house. Does anything work for you guys that meets these needs? the saltydog 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 At you current stage, plastic shoe boxes from your favorite store (target, walmart, etc) should be fine. they are about $1 each. You can go portable by putting them in a shopping bag. More fancy would be a nice wooden tool chest.
flyfishingtaz 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 make sure all materials are kept in the original packages. dont mix and match materials. keep hair with hair, in the original packages, feathers with feathers, etc. I'd do this in seperate containers. that way you know where they are without having to search for em. longears 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 Then buy 2 of everything. Keep one organized in your fly tying area at home and set up a travel case with the other.
guppergoo 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 Ideally I am looking for just one set. The wife can get a little upset when I spent so much already just to get setup w/ fly fishing.
Old Hat 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 Portable file boxes. You can keep your goods in the ziplocks and label the file dividers so you can find them quickly.
Charlie Franklin 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 Right now I keep mine in the newest fishpond tying bag which was 100 bucks but it is pretty small so I have a few other boxes now. but they do make a larger one for 160 bucks. But soon I am getting a desk so I will not need the bag unless I travel with it. hope this will help Charlie fishpondusa.com
FishyboY 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 keep the stuff in the original bags and then take all your fur/hair and put them in a ziplock bag. feathers in another bag etc. etc. etc. then alot of people put that stuff in portable file cabinets....(i think thats the word...) it like a plastic box w/handle

guppergoo 0 Report post Posted January 5, 2009 Thanks for all of the input! I am thinking of taking a hybrid approach. Create a space for myself at home that is more permanent, but also create a carry set of sorts with the most common tools.
Futzer 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2009 Have a meaningful growth plan, at least for the time when your travel kit takes up the better part of a van as mine does. And your home kit is taking space in its 3rd room. Only slightly exaggerating. Cheers, Futzer.
mwtroubum 0 Report post Posted January 6, 2009 Have a meaningful growth plan I started out like you, then went to a desk, got a nice little secretary desk with matching file cabinet that holds all my materials, magazines, books, etc. and my very patient and cool wife likes it because it looks like a normal secretary desk when closed up....Now I have a man cave in the basement currently inhabitated by my 18 year old nephew while he goes to school for a year :ripped: .....but in 10 more months its mine ALL MINE :yahoo: :yahoo: :yahoo: And then, all hells gonna break loose LOL
