dwiltshire 0 Report post Posted January 13, 2009 Here is my tying of this simple North County spider. Incredibly simple, it uses just the covert feather from a Woodcock, lightly waxed silk and a pinch of Hare’s ear. I like to tie the hare’s ear as a thorax and rib the fly using the silk. Most of all, as with all simple spider patterns they can are great fish takers: be it a brook, river, small stillwater or reservoirs. Hook: Kamasan B175 #14 Thread: Waxed Pearsall’s #20 Thorax: Hare’s Ear Hackle: Woodcock 1) Strip the soft fibres from the base of the feather and catch in with the silk so that the top of the feather faces forwards: If you like to wax the silk, try to use a clear version 2) Wind the silk down the body in touching turns, trapping the feather stem and the tag of silk 3) Now spin the bobbin holder in the clockwise direction to form a ‘rope’ of silk. Then wind back up the body to form the rib: 4) I now like to use a dark, tacky wax on the silk and dub it with the hare’s ear: 5) Dub out the thorax, stroking the spike guard hairs backwards: 6) With the silk left behind where the hackle will be, wind the hackle with two turns. Then bring though the hackle (about a 45 degree angle) to behind the eye. Catch down the hackle and trim. Build a small head and whip finish: Cheers,

rockworm 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Very nice spider. And excellent instructions. (I tye mine much the same way.) From what part of the bird did the feather originate?
dwiltshire 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2009 Thankyou rockworm. From what part of the bird did the feather originate? Covert feather - from the upper, rear of the wing. There are a great deal of useful feathers - size can be an issue though. Cheers,
