Craft Stores

Recommended Posts

The local Hobby Lobby had Ott Lights on sale for 40% off. Other things to look for:

Epoxy

Swiss Straw

Yarn

Synthetic Macrame Yarn

Craft Stores are part of the reason fly shops are falling like dead flies. Ask a craft store associate how to palmer hackle or what materials to use for a Royal Wulff.

I just got back from Hobby Lobby about a week ago. I buy things from craft stores that I can't get from fly shops. I tie a bunch of midges so I have a selection of Coats & Clark threads for Yong Specials and D&C embroidery thread for thread midges. Dave .. believe me I am on the "way too frequent buyer's plan" of more than one fly shop.

I buy things from craft stores that fly shops have at a much higher price, as well as things fly shops don't carry. I see nothing wrong with that. It is called competition--the basis of our entire economic system. If fly shops can only survive by overcharging customers on synthetic materials (which is mostly what we buy at craft stores--the feathers and such are typically poor quality) then they have a business model that isn't viable long term.

For example, you can find small bottles of fabric paint with glitter--from a manufacturer called Polymark--that is EXACTLY the same as EZ Shape Sparkle Body. The only difference is the Sparkle Body is about $3.95 per bottle, the fabric paint is less than $1. If anyone wants to pay 4 times the price for the same thing, they certainly can. I won't.

I find there is things that I would rather buy at a craft store. Such as foam. Where I buy my tying supplies it is 99 cents for a 6x6 piece. At the craft store I can get a 7x18 sheet for 49 cents.

On the other hand for tools and advice....I go to the fly shop.

I forgot to mention that I buy my popper paint at the craft store. You can get them in 2, 4 and 8 oz bottles and are way cheaper than what you get either on line or in a fly shop.

Hey Flyline64 how hard is the Polymark to work with? Great idea btw.

Just as hard (or easy) as the EZ Shape Sparkle Body. My experience is limited. For me, pretty easy to put eyes on, tougher to get larger areas uniform--such as two-tone sand eel bodies. (Here's a youtube video on tying the sand eel.)

It appears the EZ Shape is just re-labeled Polymark sparkle fabric paint, though the EZ Shape comes in more colors with sparkle than the Polymark. (There are many more "flat" Polymark colors, without sparkle.) Here are photos of the two:
