Smalltownfisherman. As coulee fishing said, leeches make great bluegill flies when tied in small sizes (8-12) Plus such simple flies as hair's ear and Half-backs work good as well. Fred&Ruth 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2009 Brought home a road-killed turkey yesterday and plucked it. Anyways I need patterns with turkey feathers in them. Becuase I don't know of any patterns. Please post any patterns you know of with turkey feathers in them. Any replies would be greatly appreciated. :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: I guess my first reply didnt go through I am new to tying and this forum also. I use the biots for tails, antennae, and bodies. I dyed some with yellow rit dye and they looked fairly good when they dried. I also use some feathers for tailing and wing cases but I am not sure where they are on the bird. they are comparable to a pheasant tail for tails and wing cases. there is also maribou on the breast feathers that is a nice light grey. I have only been tying for a few months so I also am hoping to learn more from the replies. FRed

Pauljh 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 Check out www.virtualflybox.com one of my favorite sites and the turkey wing caddis, easy to tie and very effective here in the west where we get large caddis hatches through out the summer. Others are turkey stimulator and many hopper patterns use turkey for wing e.g. Dave's Hopper, Joe's Hopper, rubber legged hopper and foam body hoppers. I also find I can substitute pheasant tail with turkey and vice versa in patterns that call for either, especially for wing cases on wet patterns. Wish I had some of your turkey feathers I have to go buy some right now!!! It's -21° C snowing so I am tying.
skyphix 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2009 Thousands of marabou patterns are available, and I think everyone else has given sage advice on what else to tie. I make really simple marabou streamers (stack the marabou so when wet the fly takes on a football like shape) that work great on shallow feeding sunfish. also, here is an almost entirely turkey generic dragon fly/damsel fly nymph I tie for ponds and lakes. Tie in a pair of eyes, weight is your choice. I also weight the hook shank with lead/lead substitute wire. tie in the marabou tail and what is left over of the feather, twist into a rope and wrap up the hook shank with it. Tie it off. Tie in some turkey feather for a "wing" case. Tie in a throat of 'bou and attach the wing back just behind the eye, finish the head with some rabbit dubbing to match. Works great as a general attractor pattern but I first tied it to imitate dragonfly nymphs I was seeing while in the Kayak. Im sure someone else has something nearly identical but figured it might help you. Here's a similar but slightly different damselfly nymph that uses marabou as a tail. You could use the turkey feather instead of the krystal flash for the back for a less flashy effect
