Guest Big E Report post Posted January 27, 2009 Can anyone recommend an online source that has a good selection of saltwater hooks? I've been looking around at the normal places but haven't had much luck. Also, can anyone vouch for the quality of Chris Helm's bucktail? Been using hareline and other standard brands but am thinking that there is better quality out there. I run into a lot of short hairs (waste) and want to try something different. I tie saltwater patterns a lot these days. My primary source for hooks as well as materials is Feathercraft in St. Louis or Millers Place in Texas for certain hooks, specifically Gamakatsu. peregrines 0 Report post Posted January 28, 2009 Big E- Actually i just got some bucktail from Chris- I ordered SW bucktails which are a buck or so more than the regular. Good stuff, hair is an honest 4 1/2 inches (I just measured), and easy to work with- not brittle or too fine, and there is very little of the hollow body hair that flares all over the place on the base of the tail. The tails are nice and full and 10" over all length from tips of hair to the cut at the base. He's also a nice enough guy that if you were looking for 6" hair or something and called he could probably select some for you, or be upfront with you and tell you he didn't have it if that was the case. As far as hooks go, what type are you looking for? Hook and Hackle has pretty good prices on basic Mustad 34007 but if you're looking for 3407 or Eagle Claw 254, Gami's, Owner etc you might want to try Bears Den or Saltwater Edge. Good luck peregrines
