Day 3 - A Break In The Clouds

Recommended Posts

Excellent captures Jay!

Looks like a fun outing, great job with the eagles also. That envy is going to cost a few dollars ;)

The first shot here should be on the cover of a magazine, well done.

Nice Pix Jay. I don't know how you wildlife guys manage to hand-hold lenses like that - I have enough trouble with the 70-200. That harrier shot is beautiful. Wait a minute! Didn't I see a harrier in the Westminster dog show last night? That one had floppy ears though.

Peter, those primes are so heavy. 14lbs! Not to mention the wind and freezing air. If I was going to be shooting like that full time I would definitely invest in a really nice tripod and mount.

Here are a couple more....

Nice Jay.

Ive been playing a sigmonster. (300-800), that a friends selling to see if I want it. It's 14 pounds, I can handhold it for breif periods (long enough to take a few shots) but it's a bear if you need to keep it up for any length of time, say while waiting for a hawk to launch. I'm torn. On one hand I want the native 800 and ability zoom in/out so I can frame a shot properly, on the other the 500 f4 IS is 4 pounds lighter and has IS.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Wulff, I completely understand the weight issue. After holding the Nikon VR 500 Prime, my arm was soar!!! I could only hold it for about 15 seconds and panning on an Eagle moving fast......well yeah I can see why you might want to go with the 500.

Seriously, I had no idea how tough it would be shooting with something of that magnitude on a moving object. I learned a lot!

Frogfish - Yes, the truck shot is HDR.

Thanks again everyone,

Nice Work Jay ! I can't imagine trying to hand hold anything that big or heavy. I usually try not to hand hold anything longer than 300mm. I was shooting birds recently with a 135-400mm Sigma and found that using a monopod is a lifesaver when shooting for any length of time.
