how do you connect your leader to your flyline?

What is the best way to connect your leader to your flyline? I tried the loop system but it catches on the guides allot.

I like nail knots. i have a tool that makes it super easy to do though. And then use 2 more to connect tippet to leader. i was taught to do this with several sizes of line to make my own tappered leaders as well.

If you use a little wax or rubber cement on the line to leader knot it flows nicely through the eyes (guides).

I have used the braided loops on my lines and think they are fine.

 

Ive alse used a nail knot to a stiff piece of mono and tied a perfection loop in the end of the mono and then just used the loop to loop connedtion and that worked too.

 

But the last few flylines i bought had loops manufactured into them

 

 

 

Ive never had a problem with the loops catching on the guides when fishing. Im not sure what your problem is there. Keep the loops as small as you can gert away with and the knots trimed close. If your using the braided loops put a drop of super glue on the end of the braided loop and make sure all the loose ends are neatly trimed

I change leaders a lot so I go with loops.

 

I have to admit using loops did cost me a real trophy Rainbow once In North Carolina. I found him resting in clear shallow water near the roots of a submerged log. I was able to approach so close crawling in from his blind side that only a few feet of leader was needed to put a nymph on a collision couse with the trout. He didn't even move...just opened his mouth and sucked it in....felt the sting and took off downstream like some sort of a water rocket. The loop caught in the guides and pop ...game over. Total elapsed time maybe 2 seconds.

 

Still, I don't blame the loops. I blame myself for being that careless...ok...you are right.. for being that stupid.

 

Maybe you would be better off using a nail knot.

IF you're having trouble with loops getting caught in the guides, try creating a mono loop.

My Orvis Bass taper 8wt line had a mono loop whipped in it and I never had a problem. The fly lines I've used since (also Orvis lines) have it bonded and slide through the glides easily.

The best thing that I have found to make a nice transition on the nail knot from line to leader is loon uv knot sense. I have use rubber cement before but it wore off after a while.

Nail knot everytime.

 

Did try braided loops but found them unreliable. Was shown another looping method years ago which was better but prefer nail knot.

SA Mastery line comes with a loop built in so I use the loop system, on my intermediate lines with no loop I go for the nail knot, theres a real simple tool that fits on your key chain that will help you tie a perfect nail knot everytime. You should be able to pick one up at your local fly shop.

I always use a Uni knot on the leader to fly line myself (unless the line already has loops in it). I've tried barrel knot and nail knots but Uni knot is far easier and if tied right, and tight, then the size is no larger than any other knot.
