Matarelli Style Whip finisher - Didn't know what I was missing.

Recommended Posts

I finally broke down and bought a Matarelli Style Whip finisher, man what was I think by not getting one these in the first place. Now i understand why everyone here keeps saying toss spring style whip finisher  I think it took me about a half hour to get the hang of this thing. Next upgrade - A bobbin rest to keep my thread out of the way :yahoo:

The Whip finisher is the best . As for the bobbin rest I made my own out of a coat hanger and it works well.

I was going to do that as well. But my wife is like Betty Davis "NO WIRE HANGERS" :j_k: All my hangers are wood or plastic.

Yep, the Matarelli is a great design. But don't discount the Thompson spring style whip finisher; there are some flies...not many, but some...that are actually easier to finish with the Thompson. The problem is the Matarelli is so easy to use that most of us won't bother with anything else.

The bobbin rest will do you the most good wtih a rotating vise. You hang the bobbin and rotate to wrap practically anything on the hook. You want to put in a half hitch before you hang it though.

Other than that I haven't found it to be that much help.

when you upgrade your bobbin I highly recomend the Rite bobbin line. The ceramag is the best I have ever used. It has a long thin ceramic tube that lets you get in very tight on the fly and all Rite bobbins have a tension setting, to set the exact ammount of tension you want on the thread.

I learned to whip finish with my hands and figured it was not worth trying a tool, but the Matarelli works very well, in fact I rarely whip finished by hand after trying it. I liked the Matarelli (and clones) but found a new favorite when I tried the Marc Petitjean whip finisher. The C&F whip finisher also looks interesting but I have not tried it.

Mostly I whip finish by hand. I do use Marterelli standard and extended jaw occasionally and I use a Thompson and a Thompson midge for parachutes and some tiny bugs.

Some one has to keep the tying industry in business

Cheers, Futzer.

I also USUALLY just whip finish with my fingers- But lately I have found I was shredding and snagging thread on rough skin. Especially 6/0 and smaller, and I've been tying smaller flies lately. 3/0 monocord doesn't pose much of a problem, but 6/0 does. I bought a Dr. Slick whip finisher, which I believe is a matarellli style. It works great for small thread and small flies. I usually touch the thread with a tiny bit of dubbing wax before whipping, and it seems to lube it just enough to eliminate all snags and fraying.

good choice! best whip finisher I ever used! the thompson that came with my tools collects dust. tried to do it with my fingers but I got too many calouses and hang nails and stuff from a habit of biting my nails so it catches the thread screws it all up.

J. Stockard does carry the Matarelli-style whip finisher, as shown in the following link:

J.Stockard refers to the Matarelli-style whip finisher as the "Rotating" whip finisher. Are you saying they're out of 'em?

Can't blame you for not seeing it -- they tucked it away behind that picture of the Thompson-style one. They should have give the Matarelli one its own picture in the main tools listing. I also noticed the "search" function didn't recognize "Matarelli" either, which didn't help.
