gaeronf 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2011 Like I said i had to try it, here it is. Note that this was tied with a knock-off cabelas vise because my medallion (regal) is packed away for the moment. I used my own personal dubbing blend I made myself. Here are some pictures (one of the fly, one of the dubbing). Critcism Wanted...
Will K 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2011 Like it and would like to do up a few. In the past on flies like this, I've tied off the head, then basically gone back and tied down the "tail"... Never was sure that was the correct method though? Should I be tying in the tail, then attaching to the head after making the body, or should I build the body, then tie the hair to the head, finish building the head and whip finish... then go back and tie down the tail, adding a little cement to finsih? Just curious if there is a better way!? Thanks
gaeronf 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2011 You tie in the tail, do the body, then tie in the butts at the head. Clip them off pretty short and make a head with you thread.
Old Hat 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2011 Will, either way is fine, however I have found tying in the tail first works best for me. I'm going in to adjust the directions a bit as I have been tying them just a bit different lately for durability. Tie in the tail. Move the thread to the front and tie in the hackle. Dub your thread and wrap to the tail base. Wrap your hackle back and tie off with the thread. Work the thread forward through the hackle to the eye counter wrapping the hackle. Pull the hair butts down and tie off. I also add a thin cement to the tail tie in, and the initial hair butt tie in before I form the fly's final head shape and finish. Greg - that looks great, a fine job on a fly that I hope brings some fish to hand for you. Carl
lykos33 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2011 I like this one Carl, I made a few (12) up like yours and then I made a few more (12) with the hair's butts cut short but not covered with a thread head...like an elk hair caddis I guess
