sniksoh 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2009 how do you tie the flash to the mono?
Pelhament 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2009 I use 40lb Maxima Ultragreen mono so its got some girth to it. I simply place the mono in the vise, take a lighter to the end to create a little bump and then tie it onto the mono. If you only have a little bit (maybe a 1/4") of mono sticking out of the vise it stays pretty sturdy and doesn't move around too much. I try to kind of spin it around the mono like you would deer hair. Tie a tapered head towards the vise (reverse of what you would normally do) and then whip finish. I also coat it with 2-3 coats of Sally Hansen. Hope that makes sense.
NEKvt 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2009 Very cool. I have been tying a nearly identical fly for a couple of years and doing well on it. I palmer marabou instead of rabbit, and tie the rubber in ahead of the marabou instead of under like you do. I used mono in the same way with the flash but have gotten away from it as I just don't like the extra step. Mine never looked that nice either, you tie a good looking fly. Cole 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2009 Awesome Fly! How about a walkthrough with photos????? That would be awesome!
txww 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2009 Geez. just when you think you got some skills along comes something like this. I've tied a few up for this coming weekend (which promises to be blown and rained out). Interesting tie to say the least. Me and my Zap a Gap became good friends. I used rabbit for the first one and then switched to artic fox. Probably because the quality of my rabbit sucks. The fox gave me the look it needed. All told I'm pleased with the results although I still need more practice at them. I want to thank you for sharing this with us. I haven't thrown it yet but know it will do well on our Texas bass. I'm going to tie some with bead chain eyes and cast them with a sinking head. It may need a couple of wraps of lead to act as a keel to make it ride hook point up but I'll be able to control the depth the fly runs at easier. Thanks again, you got some skills there! Cole 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2009 Its hard to tell how long the mono is? How long is the piece? 3" - 4"???
Pelhament 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2009 txww - Let me know how you do with them, I'm excited to hear the results. Cole - I don't really measure it I normally start with a 4" piece and then tie it so the flash is behind the hook bend to avoid fouling, probably about 3" though. After throwing some actual spinner baits last night the one aspect I am missing is the sound created by the spinner blades.
Cole 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2009 Tied a couple up and I really like them. One problem I see is how long will the bunny fir hold up, after repeated strikes? I am going to tie some up with estaz and see how they work as well. This is a pretty involved fly and I would hate for the fly not to hold up after repeated strikes. I might also try it in a medium gauge wire loop to give it some more strength. Just some ideas!

The first 5 versions didn't have any bunny hair and they all worked, so once the fur is gone keep on fishing them. Palmered bunny flies are a staple in the warmwater world and they seem to hold up just fine, so it wasn't something I was worried about. The estaz is a good idea though, I may throw that in a few as well. Im glad you like them. It is really involved. I found the easiest way to tie them is to tie up a bunch in stages. First I'll tie 20-30 posts with the flash on the mono. Then Ill attach the eyes and flash on all of the hooks, then I'll go back and tie in the skirt and the head. Helps things move along quicker. Thats exactly what I did, tied a couple in stages. I do have to agree with you though, this is not a beginner fly, there is a lot of work involved in it, but the result is worth it, it looks amazing. I will see if I can get some photos up tomorrow. Once again, great pattern. I know it will kill small/largemouth bass here.
Old Hat 0 Report post Posted April 17, 2009 Pelhament, great pattern. You need to take that to you know where in the Cascades. By the way...superb photography.
