TheBigLost 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I just got a call from a buddy who won a lottery draw for a float on the Smith river in White Sulpher Springs Montana. I plan on going with him but figure that 4 days of wilderness float in Montana in April is going to be COOOOOLD.....so, I need a good wading jacket. I am tossing around a Patagonia Guidewater and a Simms G3 but I've read so many different things about each jacket I'm still not decided. I read that Gore Tex loses it's rain shedding/beading ability after 4 or 5 rains and I've read where the guidewater holds up. Any other jacket that I have not heard of? What do you wear? Lance Kekel 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I've been using my Simms wading jacket for 5+ years and have yet to have any problems with it shedding water. It's not even the guide jacket. I've not seen the Pategonia first hand but the G3 is one sweet jacket and would be my first choice based soley on my past experiences on Simms products. Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I use to use a Patagonia for some year but now use a Browning breathable wading jacket I got from Cabela's for about $125. There's some pretty good prices on jackets at Cabela's.
CoachBob 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 First, properly cared for Gore-Tex is good for the life of the garment. Go to http://www.gore-tex.com/remote/Satellite/c...ng-instructions and you will get care instructions. Cabelas and BassPro both have good choices in many varieties and brands. For cold weather, the best option is good Gore-Tex layered over Underarmor and fleece. Getting a thick heavily insulated jacket is often a problem -- and you can't make it any cooler as you can with layers.
yuppie hater 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I bought a Cloudveil 8x guide jacket this year. It's gore-tex, has great placed pockets with lots of room for boxes. it also has neoprene cuffs that fit tight and don't need adjustment (probaly the best system out there). i would have to say it's a better coat than the g3 and the pantigonia but thats just me i guess. all around it's a sweet jacket i've used it all year in the canadian winter and spring, with zero complants. check out seirratradingpost.com they've been getting them in at insane prices. the saltydog 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I'm not sure where you heard that gore tex loses its shedding ability after 4-5 rain falls. I just had t replace my gore tex climbing jacket after almost 15 years only because it was made before they invented better seam sealing techniques. That being said, Filson makes a nice waxed cotton jacket that will last a while and also not get hung up on thorns. I was just eyeing it up yesterday while looking at a new non-fishing coat (settled on a barbour).
kodiaksalmon 0 Report post Posted April 7, 2009 I've got a G3 and a Filson. Both are tops in their respective niche.
TheBigLost 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2009 I'm not sure where you heard that gore tex loses its shedding ability after 4-5 rain falls. I think it was prolly a review from someone who disliked simms customer service. They knocked um pretty hard. This has all been very helpful. I don't think I'll be spending mega bux on one of these jackets. Seems like I can get a good jacket for a great price.
DHise 0 Report post Posted April 9, 2009 Ive worn the Patagonia SST for many, many years and replaced it with the Orvis Deluge jacket. That is the best move I've ever made. Exceptional coat with spectacular features.
