What Vise do you use?

I've always wanted a Nor Vise, but they're so far above my budget that I get light headed from lack of oxygen just thinking about them. They sure are a versatile vise though, and they still reside in my dreams. For me, it's a Dan Vise. It's the most functional vise for what I tie. It's easily adjustable for rotary tension and sturdy enough that I can rest my off hand on it in tight situations. My travel vise is a cheap Cabela's knockoff of the Thompson "A". I'm all about budget. My Dan Vise was $75.

My travel vise was $30 and it came with a carry case and tools.

I have had a Regal C-clamp vise for over 20 years it still works like the day I bought it. I have looked at other vices, but can't see fixing something that isn't broken. I am looking at getting a base mount for it and the midge jaws. I like the way the vice clamps and holds the hook like a...um...vice lol. The little regal medalion came off of the head of the vice and regal replaced it free of charge. After 20 years the vice still looks and works like new. I even super glued the jaws shut once making rubber egg flies and once I got the jaws apart it just took a little cleaning to get it looking like new. Now you would never know I glued the jaws shut!

I'm using Dyna-King Pro...only because it seems to be bomb proof. I used to tie on an HMH but like the D-K better.

I tie on a Renzetti Traveler - thumb screw version. It was highly rated (and still is) bwhen I started looking to replace the Thompson Pro numerous years ago. Bought it used & have been satisfied with it.

After tying for 20+ years on cheap vises, I bought a Regal Medallion two years ago and just got a Renzetti Traveller for Christmas. I love the Regal, my rationale for picking up the Renzetti was to have a "true rotary" and to handle smaller hooks. My assessment of the two:

 

- The Regal is bomb proof; the Renzetti feels a lot lighter and somewhat less sturdy. My impression is the Regal will last longer.

- The Regal holds hooks securely, but you have to get larger hooks in the jaw groove to hold them solidly; I was skeptical of the Renzetti's big hook holding ability but I've been very impressed, it locks down any hook solidly, even very large ones.

- The Renzetti Traveller base is fine for most flies, but its too light/small for deer hair work, which I do a lot of. However, I can use my larger pedestal base (from the Regal) and then have no problems. Note: you can get a very solid Griffin pedestal base for ~$30.

- I really like the true rotary feature on the Renzetti, although I haven't really used it to its full capability yet, just some basic stuff.

- I do like the Renzetti for working with smaller hooks. I spit some small hooks out with the Sunrise Regal knock-off I used to have, and read a lot about Regal's spitting hooks and chipping the jaws. The Renzetti seems better for size 16 and smaller hooks, but I was surprise/amused to read a warning on the placement of small hooks in the Renzetti instructions!

- Love the ease of putting hooks in the Regal. I also read a lot about the hassles of adjusting the jaws on the Renzetti, but got some good advice somewhere on this forum about how to quickly/easily adjust the Renzetti and it helped a lot (close the cam about half way, place the hook in he jaw, tighten the adjustment screw so it closes tight on the hook, then close the cam the rest of they way).

 

Overall, both vises are very good and each has its pro's/con's, it too early for me to declare a favorite.

Dyna King pride! I bought the HMH Standard before I bought the Pro but got fed up with it. Couldn't tighten the jaws without the entire vise head moving, the hooks would constantly slip if you didn't over tighten the jaw pressure, the set screw doesn't set... just a myriad of problems I had. But I do think HMH is the best looking vise out there.

I have been tying for 3 years now mostly warm water stuff. I use the Danvise because of cost and features. My smallest tie was a size 20 nymph without hackles so Iam sure that a less bulky high scale vise would outperform it. The danvise does suit me needs well.

I started with a Renzetti Traveler and have tied everything from # 24's to 3/0 saltwater flies. I finally went to a Peak Vise and love it. It's a little bigger and heavier than the Renzetti Traveler, BUT IT'S Not a TRAVELER. I travel with the Renzetti and I tie at my desk with the Peak. Made in America and backed by a good warrantee. I have all three of the jaw assemblies, but have yet to use anything other than the Mid-sized. The Traveler is a great vise, but it's name implies its drawbacks.

For years I used my Dad's old Herter's vise he bought around 1945. When he retired he wanted to start tying again so I gave it back and bought myself a Renzetti. Shortly after I bought it he gave it back and told me his eyes are too far gone to tie.

Hey all,

I am new to the forum but not new to the site. Love the site.

I am looking to upgrade my tying vise. I use an old cheapie that does hold the hook very well. I have been thinking about a Thompson Model A just because it reminds me of my old cheapie . I wanted something a little nicer to look at. Any advice would be great. I have read recently of some bad reviews of the Thompson, but I don't believe EVERYTHING I read.

I use a Peak vise--it works for just about anything I need. For the price, you cannot beat it!

It's something I built. I have had a Spartan for 20+ years and wanted something more organic looking. This was basically a proof of concept project. I am planning another using some high end jaws because I tie mostly small stuff. I appreciate the compliment as "Funky" kind of describes what I was going for.
