zebra midge - thread or tubing?

Recommended Posts

When tying a zebra midge, do you prefer to use 6/0 thread for the body or the hollow tubing? Is there an advantage of one over the other?

I've never used tubing but have used thread and span-flex. What the heck .. try the tubing and see how it works for you.

Luvabug,

I use both thread and Shane Stalcups Micro Tubing. Both work for me under different circumstances. I carry many Midge patterns in my boxes. The Zebra is one of them. I also tie it with a black Krystal Flash body ( over a thin base of black thread ) covered with clear micro tubing. Sometimes I use Pearl Krystal Flash for a trailing shuck. I just recently tied a "hot spot" Zebra using Danville fluorescent thread for the thorax.

Some other successful Midge patterns I use may be viewed here:

I fish and tie more zebras than any other fly here in MO. I use uni-thread. I tend to tie smaller ones - #18 to #22 so the 8/0 works better for me. It makes a thinner more evenly tapered body.
