Hand whip finish

Recommended Posts

Hand pluses, speed and when whip finishing a point on the hook towards the gap, say to do a weave, the length of your fingers help. Tool, better tension.

Thompson or Petitjean, finer loop at the head, so less chance to mash a hackle fiber. Materelli style, best quality whip finish knot.

Cheers, Futzer.

I find the tool enables me to put the cement on the thread when space is limited at the head. If I hand whipped then the cement would be on my hands and well...? So the tool is my favorite 99 % of the time.

I usually need all the help I can get as I am learning so the efficiency of the tool takes a lot of the worries away. Once I got the hang of it I began to understand why it is called whip.

whip finishing by hand is a good technique that may be the only alternative in some situations.

And I think it is a good skill that every tier should have in their arsonal. Even if you only use it

once in a blue moon.

Is there an advantage to hand whip finish versus using a tool to tie the knot?

While you may misplace your tool countless times, you'll always know where your hand is.

Yep, I totally agree. No reason not to do the little bit of practice it takes to become competent with all 3: Matarelli, Thompson, and hand.

A tool of your choice is great, but there will come a day when you left your tool at home and you must tie something on the river.... Tools are nice, but it's better to know how to go either way! :yahoo:
