purolohi kalastaja 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2009 I was turkey hunting with a buddy on his 40 acres a few years back. I did a belly-crawl (elbows and knees, kinda like the little green army men we used to play with) over a rise to get a shot at a HUGE gobbler hung up in the field. I couldn't get into position on him before the daylight ran out, so I crawled backwards down the hill to get out of his vision before standing up. Then I stood up. I heard someone light off a Black Cat firecracker just behind me and I went to the ground. Then I tried to stand up and realized that it wasn't a firecracker, it was my knee, and now it was locked up. Frozen solid, couldn't bend it back and couldn't straighten it. I used my 870 as a crutch (unloaded of course) and he helped me hobble back to the truck. I played it off and drove home left-footed. WhenI got into the house, I sat on the couch to take off the boots, and it popped again and I could move it. I bent it and it locked again. I went through this several time that night, and went to the doctor the next day. A week and a half later after a visit to the knee specialist and the MRI instrument I learned that I had torn the meniscus and it was floating in and out of the joint between my femur and my tibia. Two scopes later and it only hurts when the pressure changes. Oh, and that turkey? I went out the next weekend and shot him 20 minutes after sunrise while my buddy was still in his bed, wimped out because of the back surgery he had three days earlier. He later told me that my shot woke him up. The bird weighed just under 25 pounds, has a 12 inch beard and nearly 2 inch spurs that come to a nice sharp point. His tail fan, beard and spurs are hanging on the wall in my basement.

BigDaddyHub 0 Report post Posted May 3, 2009 HA HA!! I got the same reaction from a friend of mine when he called and asked "How do you make the front page of the local newspaper flyfishing?" Now that he's been with me a few times, he has a clear, full understanding of how things can quickly go from "great fishing" to "great big mess"! Canyon walls, jagged rocks, class 3 rapids and runs; deep, log jammed pools, and meth cooks just inside the tree line....the world's full of dangers, my boys! :crutch:

JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted May 13, 2009 man, you tore it up GOOD! If you're gonna do it, do it right, is what they say. I hope everything goes well with the medicos, and we wish you a speedy recovery. Just think of all the flies you can tie while you're recovering, and hopefully you'll get a day or two of decent sympathy...

flytyinfreak 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 Finally got to see Doc Casey! Come to find out he's one of the best in the region! He was amazed at the degree with which I took to totally screw my knee up, said it would really test his skills but he was sure he could do the job. He's going to use a tissue replacement technique using cadaver tissue. Cool!! I get to have a dead guys parts in my knee! He also told me that there were 2 other fly fishermen in to see him this week and last! LOL anyways I now have to let the insurance company finalize the AOK on the surgery and then schedule it. He said if I was lucky it would be between 6-9 months till I was back to my fightin shape! guess I'll be tyin a crap load of flies and floatin alot of stillwater this summer. Now all i gotta do is figure out a leg support for my one man pontoon boat.
stonefly1 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2009 No worries man, I had the same surgery 10 weeks ago today and if you follow the rehab instructions you will be fishing again in 4 months. From a pontoon in 10 weeks (going tomorrow). Rehab and physical therapy is the key......don't cheat! If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM. Make sure you ask for a flex machine right away, makes the recovery a lot easier.
