Redwings1 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2009 Technically I tied marabou jigs and added bucktail to the treble on in-line spinners long before I started tying flies. First flies were wooly buggers and PT nymphs.

oatka 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2009 I bought a fly tying kit years ago, and I think the instruction book had a wooly worm, a wooly bugger, and your standard nymphs......that was the start of it all.
Old Hat 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2009 I tied... Beadhead Hare's Ear nymphs Pheasant-tailed nymphs Elk hair caddis Catskill style Adams. I learned to tie as I was learning to fly fish and to this day I have never bought a fly except for some bass poppers once. I tied and fished these four patterns exclusively for my first two years of tying and fishing.
TerryLee 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2009 I started with wooly buggers because I was told that if I learned it I could tie anything. I went to Clouser minnows and foam spiders after that because that's what I caught fish on the most (probably still do).
Pike-Hunter 0 Report post Posted May 12, 2009 I am kind of supprised that more people didn't start on the wooly bugger. That was the fly I tied first and it did a good job of teaching me the basics of fly tying. I am still not sure if that first wooly bugger was a good thing or bad thing. :dunno: It got me addicted to one of my favorite things to do but now I spend way too much money on materials. --CHad
