Fly Tying

Have to agree with Tony.... I can't use a regular bobbin anymore either..... having to adjust thread length manually feels so weird after using an automatic bobbin.

Just did last night tyer lol... answered my own question ! I think I am gonna buy one ........

Good luck. It is definitely a love/hate sort of tool. Obviously you've been hearing from the fans. I tried one for a few weeks and was unimpressed. I've seen it demonstrated by Norm, and I've talked with several tiers who really like them. But for every tier I know who likes the Norvise, I know 2 more whose Norvises are collecting dust in their closets. Even the automatic bobbins are a mixed blessing at best in my opinion, but you'll still run into folks who can't live without their's. YMMV.

I previously tied on a Renzetti for 15 years and a Thompson for 10 before.

Picked up the Nor 4 years ago and because I had a solid tying background had little trouble adapting to it. Not a beginners tool as it needs experience to appreciate it. But would be a great vice to buy if you intend to tie for a lifetime. Dubbing is a joy and it has replaced my dubbing spinners. Solid jaw hold and the quality of the build is second to none. I have to date put over 6,000 flies through it including a great many full dress Atlantic salmonflies.

The tube set up is great and very efficient. I also have the fine jaws which tremendous as you can even turn them to face you to weave flies. The auto bobbin is also a joy and I just won't tie with a non auto one. I am confused by the negative reviews,no tier I know with experience has ever had anything negative to say about the system.

Norm gives excellent backing for his product and is always available for advice. Great service!!!!!!!!

Nor Vises are an interesting thing. It seems like a love it or hate it with little middle ground. I enjoy hearing the different points of view, but I don't think it is on my short list.

I've heard one or two that didn't like the Nor-Vise, but I can't figure out what's not to like. Its a flytying vise, and a great one at that, with many functions others never thought of adding to theirs!

I started using one 2 years back. I fell in love with it. I have increased my fly output by almost double.

Because I loved it so much, I am now a Pro Staff & Dealer here in Vancouver, Canada.

I tied for many years on a Dyna King, but now I tie ALL of my flies on the Nor-Vice!!

I'm a quick study when it comes to machinery.

I've been researching rotary vises for a while and trying to see why one (ANY one) should be in my tooling. Seems that most tiers don't even use the rotary feature in what ever type of rotatable vise they have. I thought that was interesting. Very interesting.

Then I looked into the Nor-Vise. Makes perfectly good sense to me, and no wonder those other vises aren't holding up to true rotary tying.

They aren't made for it. Their rotational mass isn't built to spin. Turn, yes, but not spin.

So I ordered mine. I didn't even get through all of Norm's video's before I ordered one from J. Stockard.

Being as I know and appreciate fine equipment, I expect to not be disappointed.

I like seeing you fellow tyers are happy with yours.

I realy have had a hard time getting used to tying over the over-sized barrel like jaws. I have had a nor-vise for about 2 years and still find my-self going back to my regal in order to get to the bottom parts of a fly. The jaws just do not hold as well as my regal's unless i put so much of the bend into them that i can't see the gap well enough to judge my positioning of materials right. It is also a pain to reset the jaw gap on pretty much every hook even if they are the same sizes.

I have had an auto bobbon for at least 10years and love it but just don't like the vise as well. But i am still trying to get used to it. It does spin nice but there are a lot of other things you have to do on most flies. I am stuck on rather or not i should spend another $100 on getting the fine jaw adapter or just get another vise altogether??? So far my regal is still going strong...

Frank,

Welcome, but now I have to tell you the bad news! There are one or two Norvice haters here!

I use Norvice also and have had nothing but good results and great service from Norm. I had no problem in learning or using the vice or other instruments. My two flytying granddaughters, now 7 and 10, have had no problems either. They began at around 5 years of age, so I figure that if a 5 year-old can learn the technique quickly and easily, the average adult should be able to do the same.

As far as I'm concerned Norvice is top-o-the-line and a great piece of equipment, manufactured with great care and perfection that I believe would meet medical standards. I use a variety of instruments at my veterinary clinic that are no better milled stainless steel than that I receive from Norm. Having said that, there are a few people who dislike Norvice immensely on this site, and they are always spoiling for a fight. If they respond, don't let them pull you in. Its a waste of time, and you will not win.

Lets see some flies!

Hey Wicked Carpenter,

just curious, why is it you hate the Nor-Vise so much? Would be interested in hearing your story.

Thanks,

Rick

Ray,

seeing you are from Texas, do you tie saltwater patterns on the Nor-Vise?
