Colored Vises

Recommended Posts

So, while tying with the guys last week, my wife says she wants a purple fly tying vise. I've never seen any colors other than metal and black.

Anyone know of a source for a purple vise? I'm sure a pink one could work as a substitute.... :D

I have thought of it, but not sure how well it would stick to the metal. I'd likely just take my first vise, a standard kit vise, and paint it for her, but how well would paint stick to the metal? I guess I could just try it. I also thought of maybe just wrapping it in some purple tape or that cheerleader/athletic wrap that some of us tiers use. It's more of a flexible foam wrap stuff. wait.........I could just wrap it in purple thread like the guides on a rod!!! now that might be something I could do myself and it wouldn't cost too much.

Thanks Joe, maybe the simple response was all I needed.

of course, isn't "powder coating" a fancy way to color metal too? I don't know anyone who does that, so it's sort of out of the question for now.

powder coating is basically just a different way of painting metal- applied as a dry powder then heat cured, usually somewhat tougher than brushed on or sprayed on paint.

gotta ask though, What's the point? oh wait, you said your wife asked. Sorry dude. I've got slapped into submission too many times when I asked MY wife "What's the point?"

"Yeah, purple vise, GREAT idea honey, let me work on that."

There are quite a few options I'm sure, but most of them probably would cost more than the vise itself.

JSzymczyk, glad to see you now see the point. ;)

See, in February we are doing our big Guys, Flies & Pies event, and we might add a beginner's table and have some "how to" demos, for those who might want to come and learn how to tie flies. My wife likes to fly fish, and has tied a few flies. She was thinking she'd like to do the demo, then that got her thinking she'd need to start tying a bit more to get ready to show others what to do, which got her thinking "hey, I need a purple vise."

Yes, even the can of spray paint might be quite expensive next to a $5 vise. I'm thinking thread and epoxy now. It might just be tough to turn the vise so the epoxy dries even and doesn't sag. the vise isn't as balanced as a rod.

Having been married most of my adult life, I can clearly see the logical progression in the thought process there.

I know Abel does colored vises, but think those are designs rather than solid colors. And VERY $$$.

Go to your local paint store (take the vise) and ask them. I bet they can come up with something.

Rustoleum, maybe?

You might want to try a company called "Reel Colors". I've had friend use them to trick out some of the boating & fishing equipment & they've always done a very nice job. If it's possible they will anodize or powder coat anything you want.

Wasatch has a red and blue option. I have wanted a blue one for years but can't afford it. Look here to see what i mean; http://www.flytyingtools.com/webpages/tools/JVise.htm

Any metal comes down to prep work if you want a good long lasting paint. Wash it very well several times and use laquer thinner for final wash. Then prime with a good 2 part hardened high build primer. Sand that with 320 then 600 gritt paper till smooth and spray with your color choice in hardened laquer. After about an hour shoot in a clear coat, repeat after about 20-30 minutes. You should have a very durable paint job on it. I paint a lot of car parts this way...

Powder coating would be the way to go to do it right, but the cost is not even close to what you would want to spend on doing something like this, trust me on this one. I've worked with powder coating companies with doing parts for my GTO and it aint cheap

Mike you hit the nail on the head with this, thats exactly what I had in mind when I read your post.

I could just wrap it in purple thread like the guides on a rod!!!

Wrap the stem of the vise with some purple gudbrod rod building thread (Size D or E would do the trick) than coat it with some rod finish and it would look just like clear coated paint. Also if its a chrome vise then the chrome would really make the purple thread pop if you didnt CP it.

...but you don't seem to sell that thread on your site :P

Hi Oatka, if you powder coat it, make use the vertical shaft still fits the clamp hole as powder coat is thick. Abel will happily anodize anything, but your last name needs to be Trump or Turner to afford it.

Maybe purple tinted glasses? Just a thought.

Cheers, Jeff.
