Popular Mechanics ran an article on building a Jon Boat long before I was born. It was republished not to long ago, I think I might even have the original publication that a I picked up at an estate auction. If I can find id I'll scan it for you. There are a few sites on the net that sell plans as well. Just remember to use a water proof wood glue, I remember my Wood Shop Teacher telling us about a student who built a Surfboard from plywood using "Elmers" wood glue. The glue was water proof and the board was not sealed, so you can imagine what happened. In my opinion though you might be able to find a Jon boat cheaper than what it would cost to build. But if you have the time, resources and patience than I wish you luck on the project.

Well JimmyBoy, If the craft of wood working is as much of a reason as having a John boat, keep the sides low and good luck. There is nothing worse than pushing a high sided boat over frog water with an upstream wind. If you just want a boat fairly inexpensively, post a message at a couple fly shops with guide services in the last week of August, for "boat wanted to buy". There is always one fed up guide, usually a rookie, that now hates his summer profession. They tend to sell cheap and quick. I would still go for a low side fiberglass one. Fiberglass is the most quiet for the weight.

Also get a long list of friends that can row, fairly well. Or you won't be fishing all that much.

Cheers, Futzer.
