Elk Hair

Recommended Posts

What is the difference between regular elk hair and yearling elk hair? Only visible difference I could see was that yearling was longer. Kind of a stupid question but I couldn't find a difference myself.

What little I know is that the yearling hair is a less course, finer hair with less broken tips. Mature elk hair that I have seen has alot of broken tips.

Yes, yearling is usually a little finer and splays less, good for smaller Elk hair caddis and comparaduns. Elk hock is also used as is coastal deer hair. Hair length can be just a factor of where on the animal the hair came from, time of year etc. To find good hair, no matter what kind it is, I always try to handle it if possible. You can get good and bad of any type.
