Lance Kekel 0 Report post Posted November 18, 2004 Question on judging criteria? Is there going to be any kind of "outline" that people should be judging them on this year or will it be like last year where we just "pick what we like"?
Guest Report post Posted November 19, 2004 Lance, I think it is important that each person judge the flies based on their own criteria. I think that makes this contest unique instead of using a group of "experts" to make that decision.

Joe Hard 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2004 I read the rules, but I have been in a "dissagrement" with someone. They insist that you must send in three flies of the same pattern for each catagory.I say it says one fly per catagory.can you settle this? Guest Report post Posted November 23, 2004 Last year it was three flies. This year is only one. We made the change hoping that it would mean more flies per person would be entered. It was cool to give a set of flies to the winner but we thought the change was the right decision.
siestafred 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I've only been tying for a couple of years, but I'll pop a couple in. Question: I see you do not require the recipes to be submitted (unless I missed that) and am wondering why? Seems to me that in judging I'd like to know how the fly was constructed rather than just having the visual to analyze.... Maybe that would be too much info to try and post in a standard format for all to see.
Guest Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I don't think we ever considered making the receipe a requirement. That is an idea we will defiently consider next year. Thanks!
atroutbum2 0 Report post Posted December 12, 2004 In the trout catagory, you have dry and wet, where do emerger patterns go, or is that up to the tier? In the steelhead catagory, what determins if it belongs in the steelhead or great lakes catagory?
Guest Report post Posted December 12, 2004 somebody asked me about emergers the other day and we thought that they might be best suited in the wet fly category. It's probably gonna have it's own category next year. If it's a fly regularly used for great lakes then put it into that category. Normally there is a vast difference between great lakes and other type of steelhead patterns.
Mark Vickers 0 Report post Posted December 15, 2004 QUOTE (atroutbum2 @ Dec 12 2004, 07:51 AM) In the steelhead catagory, what determins if it belongs in the steelhead or great lakes catagory? Good question! Just what the heck is a Great Lakes salmon/steelhead fly style? I've heard a lot of references to egg patterns. Is that it?
Guest Report post Posted December 16, 2004 Mark, There is a wide assortment of flies used in the Great Lakes. Alot of people do use a variety of egg patterns but there are alot of other types of flies as well like nymphs and streamers. Not alot of speys and other "big" flies are used. Here is a pic of OSD's Steelhead Nymph for an example

siestafred 0 Report post Posted December 25, 2004 I was telling one of my daughters about the contest today, and she asked a good question. It was......"do they tell you how your flies did in the voting?" I had to say no, I didn't think so, but had to admit it was an interesting point. That way you would get some feedback on how you did. Hmm !
Guest Report post Posted December 26, 2004 They way I did it last year I did not make the voting public. If someone wanted their results I would give them to them only. I wouldn't want anyone to get embarassed if they got a few or no votes. So once it's over anyone can get ahold me of me and I will tell them how they did.
