Albies in Avon by the Sea

Recommended Posts

Hit the salt yesterday predawn to try to get the last of the NJ Albies as their heading north. Caught two and lost another. It really is amazing how these guys fight. You should feel what a fish fights like whose heart beats 60 times a second. Although I had the fly rod on the jetty, we were blind casting metal a country mile to get these bad boys. Even with a 10ft' Tsunami rod and a pretty heavy Daiwa reel with a fairly tight drag, it ripped three nice runs of line from me. The two caught helped me out by swimming around to inside of the inlet for an easier landing. Here is a pic of my first of the day.

Later in the day we hit Island Beach in Seaside Park, NJ. What a wonderful day on the water. Cool light breeze, 70 degree ocean temps, 78 degree air, wet wadding. What a life and I love my wife.

My tog-crazy buddy got me to go all the way out to the point of the south jetty in IBSP and I didnt care for that too much. I was scared :poop: less. Ive fished the first 1/3 of this jetty which is all very nice and level without any gaping chasms. Well the rest of the jetty is a nightmare. I made my way out after my friend so all I had were the korker scraps to determine the best root. Fear and ignorance must have made me take the most arduous path over the jetty. took me almost an hour to get to the point. And do you realize you can only keep one fish. I really dont care for eating fish and other than flounder or sea bass have only kept one trout, one striper, one weakie and one grouper in my life. I tried using my green crab fly that I posted here before but they were not intersted and my buds were killing them with green crabs pulled from the rock. After that journey over the rocks I made sure to get a legal tog. so I switched to spinning gear and live crabs.

One sad point. When we were fishing the Shark River Inlet for albies, this guy and his wife were pulling 6" tog and keeping them. (legal is 14" with a current limit of one) My buddy goes over to tell him the regs and the guy slips into "No Ingleesh" so I proceed to tell him the regs and that he is a scumbag poacher in Spanish. His reply sounded like perfect english to me. Anyway, my friend Bobcat leaves the jetty to get his cell to call the warden (we keep their numbers programmed, lots of poachers :wallbash: ) and while he was away the albies came through and he missed out on his opportunity to get his First ever. Hopefully karma was watching. Dam DNR never showed up either.

Great story, thanks for sharing :headbang: That thing about the 'no English' cracked me up so bad! People like that probably don't have that happen too often. Very funny. Too bad about your friend missing out on the fish. <_<

north jetty in I.B.S.P. and south jetty in Barnegut light state park..nice fish, miss being there for sure.

My attempt at misdirection. Feel free to give me a holler as I got the Titan, a beach pass and usually an extra seat for beach warfare.

Those are my home waters Ridley! I have fished from that jetty in Avon more times than I can count as a kid. Man I miss that place! Great pick of the Albie with the Belmar pier in the background. You need to get down there for the blue fish runs....oh the memories.

Thanks for sharing....needed a boost this morning!

Nice looking bonies. I used to love catching them on light tackle, I imagine that on a fly they are ridiculous. Solid muscle packed in the shape of a football with a serious forked tail makes for one mean fighter

Stonefly

I hope you and yours are doing ok down there in GA. Didnt look too good on the news this am. the Blues have been blitzing all week. Im headed down on Friday after work and plan to stay down all weekend (truck tent) (if I can get a wife permission slip) That was my first time in Belmar and what a great easy access jetty. now that is my kind of jetty fishing.

Agn54,

I caught those false albies on an ava type lure on spinning gear. I did have the fly rod but they were over 100 yards out and werent really showing themselves. A little hard to get on the fly that way and considering how fast they disappear and that we werent mobile, I wanted to make sure I got one rather than maybe get one on a fly. I caught a few off the Menemsha jetty on the Vineyard on the fly in the past and to be honest its a bit spooky. I remember thinking they were either going to pull me off the jetty or I was going to have to let go of the 10wt.

Sandflyx - looks like a NEster is blowing in the pic. BEach buggy porn huh. Now I have to post a picture of my girlfriend.post-18764-1253724635_thumb.jpg

And here is something for your memories. Barnegat Light post-18764-1253724666_thumb.jpg

Ridley,

We are doing fine. Thanks for asking! The house is on high ground so it was just a lot of rain for us. Most of the local flooding receded by yesterday afternoon. South of us isn't fairing so well.

heres one from I.B.S.P. I carried 16 rods and reels then. had a full size bed, frig, shower, 110 elec., stove, heater, in the sandfly (van). stayed there 4 to 5 days a week, then work at Orvis 3 days. rode out a hurricane there and quite a few NEasters for sure.
