letumgo 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2009 Wow. That is a purdy fly, Carl! What size hook is that tyed on? It looks like a smaller hook size.
Old Hat 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2009 Thanks guys. Ray - it's actually a size #6 steelhead iron. But they do appear smaller than most #6's. I like the heaviness and length of that style hook for this "flymph" type steelhead fly. Hidy did tie some flymphs for steelhead but I don't think he went larger than #8. I usually will fish these in a #10-#6.
letumgo 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2009 Yeah, I like the hook a lot. It has a very nice shape. I was tying a bunch of steelhead flies today on some size 7's. It looks like a nice size for fishing.

Flyfish Dog 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2009 Very Sweet! I can see that working on more than just steelies.
Old Hat 0 Report post Posted October 29, 2009 Thanks everyone. It has done very well here where the steelhead seem to like the buggy patterns. I do use a similar pattern for trout but use india hen for the hackle. The pardo fibers just are too big for the smaller flies.
