deeky 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2009 Question for you. I've tied a few of the stoat patterns, but not having stoat tail, I've substituted black bucktail. Somewhere I saw black squirrel tail was a good sub as well. For those of you who have worked with Stoat's tail, what would be a comparable material I can find here in the US? I've looked through the sources I use and can't find anything of a stoat (or ermine), and nothing on Ebay. Thanks for the help. Deeky
Firetiger 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2009 I confess never having worked with the actual stoat, but I know that the Glasgow Angling Centre in Scotland stocks the stuff. They have the most exhaustive stocks of tying supplies I have seen. www.fishingmegastore.com Jindra
mvendon 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2009 Hi Deeky, Moscow hide and fur has Ermine tails on their website. http://www.hideandfur.com/inventory/60600515.html A quick Google search has several places in the UK that carry it as well. rockworm 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2009 The British term "stoat" is equivalent to the American "weasel". Therefore you can use hair from the tail of any of the weasel family: marten, fisher, mink, ermine, weasel, wolverine, skunk, badger, and otter. Many of these can be obtained from eBay or the fur and feather outlets (like Moskow Hides.) While similar, the hair from each species (and often each individual) varies in its characteristics of colour, length, suppleness, thickness, etc. I generally use mink or marten when stoat is called for. But I wouldn't hesitate to use squirrel tail if it were the right colour and I didn't have any weasel.
scotfly 0 Report post Posted October 26, 2009 Just use dyed black squirrel, it's what 99.99% of European tyers use.
deeky 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 Thanks to all of you. I've picked up a couple of new suppliers - including one with a decent selection of dyed duck quill!! Scotfly - Thanks. That is exactly what I was looking for. Deeky

deeky 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2009 Following up on my search for a sub, I got online and ordered a natural black squirrel tail. Took a chance on Ebay and it worked out. Color is somewhere between dark brown and black, very full, and loooong hairs. Very nice from Freeman's Fur and Feather out of Iowa. Deeky
ashley 0 Report post Posted November 15, 2009 Hi Deeky, I've tied with Stoat and dyed black squirral is pretty close although I find enough stoats on the road to keep me supplied. Ashley
