Old Hat 0 Report post Posted October 27, 2009 This has been a favorite suggestive stonefly pattern for me for years. I think it has fallen out of general use with all the more realistic stonefly patterns lately. I recommend a couple in every box. This is also a good winter steelhead pattern. Try with purple yarn for steelhead.

utyer 0 Report post Posted October 28, 2009 Your fly is a great pattern. Well done and just the right touch of buggyness. One of my favorites for trout and steelhead. This one pattern has taken hundreds of fish for me all over the country from Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, to Michigan, and Pa it just plain works. I was supprised when I got back to Pa and found some pretty big stoneflies in the rivers back here. Of course, it works in all sizes, and several other colors. Fallen out of favor? No way, at least for me. I find this pattern does everything I need in a stonefly nymph. If I'm up to my but in a fast deep run this is the fly I want on my line. I tie and fish this in black, brown, and tan. I also tie up a peacock body version with black hackle. When the flies are hatching, casting a big one of these in shallow riffles near the bank and letting them dead drift into deeper water works better than any thing. You won't find any other pattern in my stone fly nymph box. I have confidence in this pattern, and through the years, it has proven to me that its a real fish getter. Simple and fast to tie, durable, and it takes fish all year in big fast water. What more does any one need?

BigDaddyHub 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2009 let's not forget that this pattern also takes bass in warmer climes when fished in waters that have healthy hellgrammite populations. Very nice tie of an outstanding classic, Hat.
ChuckingFluff 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2009 Looks like that would work on a whole lot of fish. Another great tie.
