buzzin frog 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 I was thinking about parachutes the other night and how to improve them. One idea I had was to spin a little deer hair around the post instead of a feather. Has anyone ever tried this?
rockworm 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 I think you would need a strong, rigid post. The Partridge HE1 Parachute hook might fit the bill. It has a looped eye- the return wire extending back and bent up to form a wire post. I don't see why you couldn't spin some fine deer hair around this post. On the other hand, virtually the same effect can be had by tying your deer hair under the thorax and splaying it out to form radiating legs. As in Stalcup's Deer Dun. Whichever way you choose, I will be interested to see how you do and hope you post the results here.
utyer 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 A comparadun tie would achieve the same effect. The post, wing, and hackle (legs) are all simply the same splayed deer hair.

flytire 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 Has anyone ever tried this? yes. there is a technique that uses a loop of fine wire for the post. deer hair is inserted inside the loop and spun similar to a dubbing loop and creates the parachute just like a hackle does. the wire stub is the cut off
rockworm 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 flytire- That sounds EASY. Any idea if the wire makes the fly topple?
flytire 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 i dont know tie one up and give it a try http://www.flyforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=26230 i dont think a half to three quarters of an inch of fine gold wire is going to be enough to over weight the fly and turn it upside down. rockworm 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 Thanks for the link Flytire. The man says "you just can't sink 'em." And from the looks of his example, I would agree. I plan on tying a few soon to see what the fish think.

mdraft1 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2009 thanks for the posts on using the wire loop and deer hair. I just tied a few up. They are pretty easy and look like they will float all day.
buzzin frog 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2009 after putting the deer hair into those wire loops how would you tie on a parachute? Right onto the wire with some thread?
day5 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2009 no you twist the wire. as it twists the deer hair is made in to the parachute (like a big pipe cleaner). then you clip the wire off add a drop of super glue and your off..
