Ridleyffo 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 Remember: Declining Marginal Cost. You may never get down to a $1 a fly but that cost will keep dropping as you fill up those boxes. Ive only been tying for two years this xmas and I shudder to think about how much Ive spent to date. Right now Im designing some built in shelves and drawers which I going to put on my tying room wall. I should probably only stick to the design and my carpentry skills are only average. Looks like I'll be calling my carpenter soon. I figure at $300 a day, his labor cost hopefully wont exceed $1500?
rich5665 0 Report post Posted December 10, 2009 Congratulations, savor the moment and put that ugly fly in a safe place along with those pictures. Many years from now you will look back on this and have very fond memories. And as for buying your flies, can you buy the feeling you have from catching those fish on your own creation? well the fly is not all that ugly , it was about number 20 are so . next to the first one i tied it is a good looking fly . i see the sickness right now 30 flies have cost me about 150 dollars are so . so thats about 5 dollars each Nice catch. Like everyone says, you won't save any money anytime soon. I've been at this for almost a year now and estimate I've spent at least a grand on materials, storage, tools, stamps and envelopes for fly swaps. It's an addiction to say the least. Good thing I like to fish. As for photographing the fly, if your camera has a manual setting try it. Also use a solid background to photograph against. A tripod or mono-pod will help reduce camera shake. Surrounding the fly with light will help reduce the need for a flash. Or you can diffuse the flash a bit by holding a few pieces of white paper in front of it.
utyer 0 Report post Posted December 13, 2009 You have learned something already. Yes ugly flies work. They work on all kinds of fish, and are usually pretty easy to tie. Yes petty flies also work, and they work even after they get chewed up a little bit. There are many tiers who look for the ugly fly first. I have always been a big believer in the ugly fly, and they're usually the easiest ones to tie.
Olefish 0 Report post Posted February 11, 2010 The cost will go down so I have been told. :wallbash: I love the blue gill been chaseing after them for years, I don't get many catfish on my flies but I have to say I got more then one and I got a small blue cat, maybe 2lb. and some flat head maybe a lb. or so. Never got any 5 lb. or close. I have got some carp over 5 and some I never got landed they were big and still growing. They grow 2 or 3 oz. every time I talk about them. :headbang: Keep tieing and use your own or just maybe ????? one you got in a swap now and then. neoFLYte 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 i see the sickness right now 30 flies have cost me about 150 dollars are so . so thats about 5 dollars each 1. I never met a fly that caught fish that was "ugly". 2. I am glad I've dropped a few bills on fly-tying over the past couple of years instead of a few hours in a shrink's office. 3. In a former life I had a <gasp> bass boat. I used to joke about fish I caught being "worth X thousand dollars". Nevertheless, I enjoyed every second I spent on the boat and didn't regret a single dollar I spent on the boat and the upkeep. I suppose I could apply the same math (on a smaller scale) to fly tying and fly fishing, but I don't bother. And tying a few flies after a day of cubicle madness is a great way to escape the grind. David Legg 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 Congrats, this is a moment to savor forever. Next step is to stop buying flies and only fish your own, now that you proved yours can catch fish its not an issue. at this point i think it would be cheaper to buy my own i have spent about a bill and a half for about 15 to 20 flies lol To ChuckingFluff when i try to take a pic of them they come out washed out from the flash are blury I have spent thousands and tied thousands, so I am probably ahead.. or am I? Is this what they call new math?
clockman 0 Report post Posted February 14, 2010 I'll agree...fly tying is better therapy than the shrink or booze. I need an escape to the man cave almost every day, I'll bring a beer, tye some flies, watch a dvd and relax. I try to keep things on the cheap, but that sometimes will cost you more. I justify the cost of tying by telling myself that at least I'm not blowing it on illegal vices.

Carl Z 0 Report post Posted February 21, 2010 i caught Three fish 2 bream and about a 5 pound catfish . The big cat took me about 10 mins to land . The surprises are fun. I remember feeling a crappie pecking at my fly when my rod almost was ripped out of my hands. The catfish must have been going for the crappie. I ended up landing the 18" catfish. DoctorD 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2010 Ugly flys flat catch fish. We all aspire to tie pretty flys but its tough if you are an occasional tyer. Just remember the pretty flys in the fly shops are intended to catch flyfishermen with an added benefit that they also catch fish. Keep tying and don't through your mistakes away, they will catch fish. Lanning
