do you look on you tube for patterns

Recommended Posts

Sure U-Tube is a good news, bad news kind of thing, you see there are a lot of want-to-be tiers that think they know how to tie, but can't,(let alone posting a video) so you have to be careful , learning bad habits are tough to break. Having said this there are certainly some great tiers there , people like Davie McPhail, google him and check out his videos, he will steer you in the right direction

i like to see what other peoples patterns are and you tube is good for it. I stole my stonefly pattern off there and it has been working great for my home rivers but i have seen some real junk too

Bruce Is tellin the truth, I was trying to learn to tye an intruder a few weeks ago and had to sit through a 3 part 30 minute video! I was actually poking myself in the eye with sharp sicks by the time I got to the 3rd part. I've also had to watch a guy tye a fly and use so much dubbing wax on his thread it looked like he was wippin buggers off of his finger tips! But then there's guys like, Dave McPhail who is my hero! That guy just plain kicks ass! He's eloquent and descriptive as well as being very fluid in his style of tying. He tyes on a L.A.W. vise which is a real treat to see as we don't get to see them enough here in the states.

I find them more entertaining than whatever my wife has on the TV. Some are fantastic (Davie McPhail as mentioned), others are just bad. But I find it worthwhile watching some of the bad videos. I try to be critical and think of how I might improve my own techniques to avoid making similar mistakes. I don't really watch for patterns, but for techniques.

Mike.
