You are so close to the perfect "shadow box" quality . Please don't misunderstand, this is a great job and for fishin its the bomb, but with your talent you could start catching fishermen, definately top notch JOB Your buddy, Bruce

ChuckingFluff 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2010 What do you use to stick them on? I like how tight your deerhair is. Is there a trick to get it that tight, mines alright but yours is like a cork.
Hairstacker 0 Report post Posted January 23, 2010 I like how tight your deerhair is. Is there a trick to get it that tight, mines alright but yours is like a cork. The "trick" is to use sufficient hair in each bundle and stack it (i.e., hair stacked on top of hair). If you only "spin" hair but don't also stack it (i.e., 1 or more bundles on top of previously tied in hair), you will never achieve that level of density. By the way, you can stack hair on top of spun hair or previously stacked hair. Also, you can stack it on top, on the bottom, and/or on the sides of a fly, depending on what you're trying to accomplish. By "stacking," you're basically holding a bundle of hair in place as you cinch it down and secure it with thread wraps, without allowing it to spin or rotate whatsoever around the hook. Ever notice how even on a moderately packed fly, the fly gets more dense as you trim closer and closer to the thread wraps when you do your trimming? Well, by stacking hair on top of hair, not only are you adding to the amount of hair on the fly but you're also raising the level of the thread wraps, so that when you do your trimming, you end up trimming closer to the thread wraps. Voila, a tighter, much more dense fly. Some folks mistakenly believe the key to a tightly packed fly simply lies in the effective use of a good hair packer tool, but that is only part of the equation. Lastly, it does take a little practice to be able to asses how much stacking to do so that you can end up getting the desired shape and density of the fly without inadvertently trimming through your thread wraps in the process. -- Mike
