Rockbass 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 I always pinch the barb down, but is it better to file it down and completely get rib of it? :dunno:
David Legg 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 I haven't had any problems with most hooks just pinching down the barbs. With a few hooks, I've found the temper a little too high, and then the barb breaks off, and then you might have a little resistance to removing the hook, but it isn't bad. I filed one once, and have never tried again. I thought it was a little too troublesome.
Driftless6 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 same here I just pinch, Tiemco hooks have really small barbs compared to like Mustads. I had more problems with the Mustads actually breaking, never had a problem with Tiemco and like David I only filed once and pinching is a lot faster
Willied 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 I used to pinch, now I just buy barb-less if I can.
C Teeter 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 I pinch em too, it's alot of trouble to file and I think if you file the coating off that is on most hooks it causes them to rust real quick. Which I usually lose them well before it becomes a real problem, but then I'll cast into a briar patch gaurded by a machetti weilding maniac in a hockey mask if it's a good looking pocket!!! BrianMyers 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 Pinch it and tie. Hooks comes out smooth enough ( little damage ) without filing on small to normal size hooks but when you get to some of the larger bass stinger hooks and such the barb can be quite tough. Gustav F. 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 I prefer pinching the barb down. Then you can tie on any model of hook you like (compared to barbless) Filing the barb down I wouldn't say is necessary.
longears 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 If I have barbed hooks that I'm going to fish , I pinch otherwise like " Willied" said, buy barbless.
Voodoo 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 screw barbless, i find i have about 30% to the net on barbless but 80% with a pinched barb. I like that bit of a bump to help lock it in
